Wing mirror wiring on MK2.5

Featured Replies

Hi, so.i got my focus(finally). Found that the driver side indicator lamp.ismcraked so I am replacing is. The one being sent has a plug on it. The wing mirror ones go right deep down into the door, so I am looking a splice the new on in, so which one is the live and which is the neutral?

Ok let me try again

Passenger near wing mirror indicator lamp is broken

Looking to replace it, however the one sent has two cables same as the lead out to the indicator bulb.

So I am looking at splicing it in so I need to know which cable is going to be the live, mainly so I dont kill myself. The plug is solid so I can't open it up to see.

I will try and get a photo in the morning if that helps.

Your post makes no sense but I can assure you that the live one will be live.

Other than licking it how do I find out...

Firstly, there isn't a neutral, it's a car not a house.

Secondly, if it's an original filament bulb, it doesn't matter which way the wires go, it'll work regardless.

Thirdly, is your original plug broken? If not, just unplug it. There shouldn't be any need for splicing with this job.

However... If it's an LED upgrade then the wires will need to be the correct way round. You can test them by just touching the bulb to see which way works. Or you can use a multimeter. If you get a + reading then your red lead is on the positive. If you get a minus reading then the red lead is on the negative.

It doesn't appear to have a plug just a so let for the bulb which disappears into the door

The bulb holder just pulls out from the cracked part. That split line between the wires and the outside is the join. That reveals the bulb which just pulls straight out . A new bulb just pushes into the holder, the holder pushes back into the new lens assembly and it is then ready to replace the screw and the mirror cover.

I'm changing it for some graduated led ones which come with a plug fitting

Link to eBay

Those eBay lamps just plug into the wiring socket at the mirror.

Pull or twist the rubber socket housing to remove it from your original indicator. Then pull out the bulb that’s in the holder. The new connector on your eBay lamps pushes into the bulb holder in place of your bulb. You’ll just need to check if the lamp works due to LED polarity, if not try removing the new connector and turning it 180 degrees then refitting.

If you’re still unsure there’s bound to be some videos on YouTube to help.

To help avoid water getting into the lamp it’s useful to seal around the wires where they go into the lamp - either with something like silicon sealant or using a hot glue gun
