FOCUS MK1 - Rear window end of travel motor calibration?

Featured Replies

I have a MK1 Ford Focus with an issue on the rear driver’s side window. The window got stuck in the down position, and after removing the door panel, I found the regulator cable had snapped and become tangled. I replaced the window regulator and fitted the original motor.

The window now moves up and down smoothly, but when the window seemingly was all the way up, I tapped the up bottom and heard a loud click so immediately put the window down.

With the motor removed from the regulator I observed the following:

  • One touch down - motor infinity spins

  • One touch up - motor does NOT spin

  • Holding down - motor infinity spins

  • Holding up - motor infinity spins

The other three windows in the car still have full one-touch functionality for up/down.

I understand there’s a calibration process (holding the switch when the window is fully open or closed), but I’m hesitant to try it because of the click noise when the window was fully closed.

How does the motor detect when the window has reached the top/bottom? Could the motor have been damaged when the regulator cable failed the first time, and could that be causing this issue?

The one touch function works through some sort of memory module. I'm not sure whether a Mk1 uses separate door modules or whether there's a central comfort module.

The module detects how much current the motor pulls. When the motor reaches an obstruction it pulls more current. At a pre-determined maximum current the motor will be stopped by the module cutting power to it.

If the motor isn't stopped by a solid obstruction then it sounds like a cog is slipping somewhere. Either on the motor or on the regulator.

Once it knows all the way up it should then set all the way down.

Put window up without using secondary "one touch" feature on switch (first section only)

When it gets to the top pull the switch fully and hold it for six seconds, you should see it jump slightly.

Now fully lower the glass and do the same again in the down position and it should be set
