Gearbox replacement

Featured Replies

My son has a Mark 4 1.0 Ecoboost 6 speed, 2019, that went in for a service today. The engine had been running a bit rough and it turns out there was a leak at the gear box seal. we have a good mechanic but does anyone know where we could source a reasonably reconditioned one as the gear box needs replacing. Thanks

This car has the Ford/Magna (previously Getrag) MX65 transmission.

The modular design MX65 transmission family (5-speed 5MX65 and 6-speed 6MX65) was designed as a low-cost successor of the old 5-speed IB5 transmission. The Ford 6MX65 transmission is also known as the Getrag 6MTT215 where 215 stands for the maximum allowed torque that the transmission can handle.

Being developed to be cost effective to manufacture and not to be durable and strong the MX65 transmission has its problems. Failure of the 1st and 2nd gear synchronizers and sometimes even the gears itself is extremely common on the 6MX65 transmission. Especially on heavier vehicles like for example the Focus MK4/MK4.5.

Ford even stopped using this transmission for the 155 HP Mild Hybrid version of the 1.0 EcoBoost due to the many failures.

Buying a used MX65 transmission is like Russian roulette since there is a considerate chance that the replacement also develops problems in the near future.

Therefore, I strongly recommend to either buy a fully rebuild transmission or have your existing transmission professionally rebuild. When rebuilding these transmissions, it is important to use the latest updated parts as prescribed by Ford. Do not buy a transmission that has been rebuild using disassembled parts from other used transmissions.
