1.0 focus eco boost noise

Featured Replies

This noise has occured since I have owned the car, it sounds like a gargle/farty noise when I come off the accelerator and it starts to drop revs when I'm at low speed/gear. Haven't found any information online anywhere

Hi,

We don't know how long you've owned the car. I assume not from new?

Usual culprit is a blowing flexi section at the front exhaust.

There is a chance it's turbo compressor stall, but that usually happens when lifting off at higher RPM.

Sorry I've owned this car coming up 2 years in September. Yes the noise is coming from the front of the car so the front exhaust could make sense, do you know if it's an easy fix or a costly one 🤣 thanks for the reply!

It's such a common fault that there are now repair sections readily available on ebay etc, so no need to replace the whole cat which would cost around £1000...

One example here - Focus 1.0 MK3 Ecoboost Stainless Steel Flexi Repair Replacement Exhaust | eBay UK

However, an exhaust blow should fail MOT, so if it's been like that for 2 years, it could be something else.

Is there a way that I can test more in depth if it's this part? Hope is it this as it's a cheaper fix than expected. thanks for finding the part!

There are two tests I can think of, but neither are easy on your own without a garage ramp.

First one is to check for soot splatter from the leak. Usually it will splatter backwards along the pipe from the hole, but if an MOT tester hasn't noticed that, I suspect it isn't visible in this case.

The other option is to start the engine and then cover the tailpipe with a thick rag and your hand. That should force the exhaust gas out of any other holes. But very difficult to be listening/feeling around the flexi section while also holding a rag over the tailpipe.

Third option is just to take it to a local exhaust shop and ask them to put it up on the ramp and have a look for you.
