Fiesta 1.25 1997 erratic low speed running

Featured Replies

Hi, I have recently bought a Fiesta 1.25 1997 with erratic low speed running. It was cheap to allow for this fault. I am new to this forum and hope somebdy can help me with this problem.

The car starts OK then as you increase the revs, it runs as if on three cylinders up to 3,200 revs then at this precise point runs perfectly above 3,200 revs. As the revs drop the same happens (ie. it runs rough below 3,200 revs.) It does not matter if the weather, or the engine are hot or cold.

There is a smell of petrol and the fuel consumption is terrible. There is black smoke on reving the engine.

I have replaced:

- Plugs

- Leads

- MAF sensor

- Lambda sensor

- Coil pack

- I have measured Throttle Position Sensor resistance off the car and it gives a smooth progressive increase in resistance.

- I measured the compression and its 185 - 190 psi on all pots.

- I have sprayed engine starter around the inlet manifold and it has no effect.

- I have blanked off the Idle control valve ports and no change (apart from no idle).

- I have disconnected the battery numerous times to effect a "reset".

Please help - any thoughts welcome.!!!!

Hi.

I have very similar problem with my ’96 Fiesta 1.25. In idle only 1-2 cylinders are working, but it is going better if I increase rpm. Suddenly from 3200 rpm motor is running normally. The problem started after a carwash in first could day in this year.

Any suggestions what could be the problem?

That is changing at 3200 rpm?
