Cracking spot mate!

I've uploaded the wrong starting pics. I was gonna start this thread a couple days before end of July, but decided to restart on 1st of month to make it easier to track. I have the correct starting photos on mobile and will fix the mistake when I get home.

Thanks for pointing that out mate.

Was late for work yesterday so I lost alot of MPG!!

This is end of Day 13.

Pics are, MPG, miles done and diesel needle

Doesn't matter what I do, this mpg just keeps dropping!! Surely with the car getting lighter with less fuel, it'd be getting more economical!?

MPG, miles done and needle

day16summary.jpg

tomorrow will be the last day of this :D

If I was getting that mpg over that distance I'd be well pleased. You will only know exact mpg when you gas it up and calculate it that way. But you should still be pleased. Plus for that last run to the gas station, take that downhill route!!

haha. I've made sure I use the car for the same journeys I normally would. Haven't detoured or avoided using it, just changed style of driving.

Went to the gym after tonights photos, car reckons I've got around 48 miles left. Hopefully get to work and back tmoro!

ps. I did finish this the day after my last post above, but haven't had a great deal of time to merge the pics. Will do it soon.

Any guess's to how many miles I finished on?

I'm going for 597 miles and 67.9MPG

69 mpg 600 miles is my guess

Filled up

Even though trip meter reads, 68.5, my maths works out at 67.5.

Then trip meter read I have this many miles left to my full tank

42 litres in...you must of coasted in on fumes....book says 40 litre tank for diesel, allowing 2 litres for filler pipe you lucky you didnt run out. Now do same test again...but with A/C on...to see if big difference. Good result tho.

The expected miles counter was at around 30 miles, when I was only about 4 miles from home..... then started hammering down, seriously went from 30 to 4 within 2 mins, I tried putting foot on clutch to preserve it... but it had made up its mind.

I was genuinely hoping for 650 total miles, as I've had 630 before, and was even more careful this time.

I won't be doing this test again anytime soon as its is very boring..... although I will do it again when I get the car remapped ;)

Great results mate! I usually get about 450 miles to a tank and the computer always reads 45mpg after each tank. Don't drive carefully though.

This week I've been driving carefully. Have done about half the tank and is showing 55mpg. So driving carefully has gained me 10mpg so far. That's not going above 2000rpm when going through the gears. And only going to 2500rpm on motorway (65-70mph).

I've seen a few people mention that they've had their ECUs reflashed (i think that's what they said) by Ford because they haven't been getting great mpg. Have you had this done as mine is also an 09 plate

  • Author

Not to my knowledge... not since I've owned it. but I only bought it earlier this year, and the guy that owned it before me worked for Ford and let his wife use it all the time as he had a company car, so quite possibly?

My ecu will be getting reflashed when it gets remapped soon too :D

Do you find that this happens a lot? This especially happens to me after about a quarter of a tank has gone, the miles to empty normally rises in the first quarter of a tank but for the second quarter (possibly more) it rapidly drops, say I do 50 miles a day and it drops at least 80 each day!

I'm not heavy footed, always try to stick below 60, rarely hit 65mph, and below 2000rpm gear changes..

I know I probably shouldnt rely on this reading so much, but should I be a concerned..or at least a little bit concerned that it does this?

Is it something that could be rectified, or is it something that I should just live with and not read into it so much?

  • Author

I wouldnt worry about it. The reason I think it drops so much at the end of a tank is maybe because of the shape of the tank? dunno if its thinner at bottom, meaning the level drops really fast? Or maybe Ford just trying to scare me into thinking I could possibly run out and its programmed into it?

I think the first quarter of the tank is just the car trying to figure out exactly what you're gonna be able to use..... for example, look at above pics... I filled up and it reckons I would get 561.8 miles to empty.... I mean, how? I just done over 60 miles more than that for the previous tank, so it can't be figuring it out on the average MPG since reset?

It's a mystery mate. A very vague guide that shouldn't be given 100% trust. :P

Dannyboy

Great results man! Makes me happy that a diesel ZS can go that far on a tank since im buying one in the next month or so :D

My mk6 1.2 will only do 350 miles on a tank :(

a 1.6 diesel will handle those high speeds easier than your 1.2 petrol ;)

Even booting it around at high speeds and not caring about mpg, I'm still hitting over 50mpg comfortably
