Tax Disc No More

Featured Replies

Well guys/gals

From October 1st tax discs will be no more

http://www.theweek.co.uk/uk-news/59941/road-tax-changes-how-the-dvlas-new-system-will-work-without-tax-discs

But what if you get ur tax for free? Would you need to add it every year even though it's free?

Use as a coffee or Tea mug coaster. ( put a piece of plastic in to cover the tax disc) ,earn browny points off the missus for not getting cup rings on the furniture .

I received a letter from DVLA and had to renew online (very easy and quick)even though the car was tax free.

Yeah you just do a renewal, when its free, its just an acknowledgement that its you who is still responsible for maintaining the vehicle. The V5 is just the person who is responsible for insuring and taxing the vehicle, so the tax auto renewal and insurance are being tracked electronically.

This is an interesting point, I'd like to see what a policeman would say if he pulled you over for not paying your £0 road tax :P

I didn't know the tax (or VED) had anything to do with maintaining the vehicle. Surely it would make more sense if zero tax vehicles are just ignored. The whole point of doing away with tax discs was to save time and money for people wasn't it?

Exactly what i was thinking! lol

No more tax disc in the windscreen, whoohoo!

So u have no more tax disc but u still have to pay car tax is that right? And what you mean 0 tax vehicles???

Uk car tax is calculated on emissions.

If the car was registered on or after 1 March 2001, there's a series of car tax bands based on fuel type and CO2 emission levels.

Before 2001 it was calculated on engine size.

ah yeah you see Ireland have started to do that from 08 on wards but theres already talks that there going to raise the tax for the cars with low emissions which is a disgrace but why should i be surprised we are taxed for everything over here no reason why they wouldnt try to get more money on a tax that they barely spend on what its supposed to be spent on the road the GOD DAMN ROAD. 75% of tax made from petrol or diesel sales paid to the government for the roads again supposedly so we pay 2 taxs for the road and they cant do it up.

a tax in our wages also is supposed to cover water charges but no they brought out a water meter cause they dont think they are getting enough. Funny thing is the company that won the contracts to install them was in 200million euro debt that they were given to build some thing with which never happened but there debt is now wiped clean simply cause the public will pay it back :(

so if there is any country that deserves a tax break is Ireland :P

I must admit, I do wonder what Halfords are going to fill the shelf space with when they inevitably remove their boy racer tax disk holders :p

Boy racer parking permit holders ;)

Word is you can also now pay road tax monthly by DD at no inflated rate so pay the standard years worth monthly.

Thought there was a small surcharge for DD - in the same way there is one for 6 months under the old scheme?

From what i read it didnt look like there would be, but I struggled to make sense of it with all the DVLA mumbo jumbo

you pay a fiver a year I think for DD - I plan on having mine go out monthly so I can never forget to renew my tax :D

I've found one DVLA news article that says biannual & monthly payments will incur a 5% surcharge (half the current 10% for biannual charges)

I'll stick to annually for mine - pay as little as I can for it!! (It may cone as no surprise that I have Yorkshire ancestry)

as im silly with money I think montly will be best for me too but them its another bill! Due to renew next month so have to see if i can get the cash haha.

Can you still go post office to do it? I havent though to check that

Yes you can.

The theory behind offering monthly installments is that it will pull in all those that currently avoid paying as they reckon they can't afford it.

Time will tell.

Haha Sean deep pockets?

Haha Sean deep pockets?

Just lucky to have a job that enables me to save reasonably easily and parents who will happily let me live rent free because I've done so much work around the house lol

Lol I'm quite Yorkshire in nature I must admit, heck if I didn't need them I would amputate my arms to make the nature more realistic lol

I'm just careful lol

Look after the pennies and the pounds look after themselves ;)

we don't have that here in Ireland maybe they might bring it in in a while depending on how well it goes over in the UK. we have every 3 months (which i used to have to do for a wopping 190euro that was for my 99 1.9 tdi golf my girlfriends tax for the year on her 1.0 micra was 199 euro) we have every 6 months would have cost me the 300+ mark and the yearly which would have cost 600+ to tax again that was a 99 1.9 tdi golf.

now with the 08 focus its 280euro yearly (unless they actually change it like the rumours are saying that they are planning on it something to do with loosing out on money in there pockets)
