Odd Knock In First And Second Gear Only

Featured Replies

Hi Guys,

Another minor niggle I have, if I accelerate hard in first and second gear, I find a very light knocking noise (just seems to be like one or two small knocks then stops) when I hit about 3.5k revs. this is only in first and second gear when accelerating hard, doesnt seem to happen any other time. If I accelerate gradually to these speeds, I cant find the knocking noise.

Any thoughts? I am wondering if its as simple as maybe an engine mount, but those where checked about 9 months ago and where all clear (I know it can change in that time!) but I am just wondering if anyone can point me in another direction I havent yet considered!

I have almost exactly the same issue with my Focus.....did you manage to find the cause?

  • Author

Not yet, but it went through to major service with no advisories and they took to our for a test drive, maybe I'm imagining it is more than it is?!?!

Hmmm that is strange - definately something not right! i had lower control arms replaced a couple of weeks ago so thought something wasnt dont up tight enough and has worked loose. Typical my mechanic takes my money and goes on holiday when he's needed lol if you figure it out let me know and i'll do likewise :)

No worries, the only thing I know that does need replacing is on the brakes and the rear bushes for the control ark I think it is, it could be one or the other or both. I bought the car a full set of brakes today, 107 quid for disks and pads. The front are pad worn mainly disks less so. The rear are all apparently shot (95% worn disks and pads) car stops normally and tight and in emergencies so they must be good even if they are dying lol....

Had my front brakes done with the control arms.... the mystery continues

Hmm I will see what happens after I have sorted the brakes...

Spoken to my mechanic today, without too much desciption of the issue from me - he pretty much described the issue exactly and reckons its the Dual Mass Flywheel on its way out...

Oh dear lol hopefully it's not doom for both of us lol

Found the problem on mine :) wasnt the DMF after all. It was the centre exhaust bracket - welded up and jobs a good'un no more knocking :)

Haha, the irony... I was just about to reply also... I think I found my issue too!

Same area, centre exhaust... But the protective crossbar was slightly buckled (I buckled it a lot more, but that's another story). Anyway I took a hammer and started unbuckling and straightening the bar and now I don't get the noise. Recon where the exhaust was naturally flexing at its highest shift point it was knocking onto the cross bar. Jobs done.
