Intermittent Stuttering And "limp" Mode" 1.8Tdci 2008

Featured Replies

Hi

Bought 2008 Mondeo 1.8TDCi about 6-7 weeks back, 72000miles. Problem I have is occasionally the car will stutter a little, feels a bit like when an automatic is changing gear. This only happens once every few days, seems quite rare but is a nuisance. The car has also twice gone into the "limp" mode when this has happened, but 1700 miles/6 weeks between each occasion. No obvious pattern that I can see, it can happen in any gear at any speed and doesn't matter if I am accelerating hard or driving more conservatively.

Wondered if anyone had any thoughts on this, I am hoping it is nothing serious as the car drives beautifully 99% of the time, would have thought it would be happening a lot more frequently if there was something wrong - but then I am no expert! Have already blanked my EGR as this seemed a likely culprit - but it still happens. I know blanking the EGR should help reduce the build up of muck in the system but is it possible that any dirt remaining from before I blanked it could still be in there?

Many thanks for any advice on this.

Cam shaft sensor can give this problem, normally when the engine is up to temp or hot

  • 3 weeks later...

I have the same issue on the same model of Mondeo , I have a 2009 with 40k on the clock intermittent and get limp mode twice a year but hesitation nearly every week , if this is camshaft sensor I will change first to see as they are only about 20 quid I thought it was more like signs of injector failing , did you get the problem checked out?

Hi

Had mine investigated by diesel injection specialist. Injector 3 has an intermittent electrical fault, something wrong/damaged with the crystal inside (sorry cannot recall exact wordings) so will need a brand new injector as reconditioned ones apparently reuse the original crystal? Also my other 3 injectors are showing signs of wear and he reckons they may need changing in the next few months/2 years if lucky. I guess those could be reconditioned if it is normal wear an tear.

Yours may not be the same problem as he said it was quite rare but you never know.

Currently in a dispute with the dealer as had the car only bought 2 months ago and problem was there at the time. I have paid £271 already for the investigative work and then it will cost another £344 for the new injector, he has offered to send me a cheque for £200 as he says that is how much it would cost him for "his" mechanic to fit a new injector or take it back to them but they are 150 miles away and not sure I trust they will do it right. but he has totally ignored my initial £271. Anyone got any thoughts if he should be liable for that as well, as he did give my thumbs up to get it checked out and at no point did he say he would not pay for that part of it.

Cheers

Thanks for the update might not be as rare as ford might let on as I have the exact same symptoms I previously had it into ford who found a slight anomaly with injector 3 but then only remapped the injectors

I have to admit as it is not causing me any major problems I am tempted to carry on as it is unless it happens more often, my only issue is getting as much money out of the dealer as I can so that means I would need it sorted asap while under warranty.

Interestingly, mine has not made a single stutter for around 2 weeks now, it is that random, but then tomorrow could get it 2-3 times, just never know.

Let me know if you do follow it up on yours any further and what they find.

My injector 2 is faulty , anyone with the same symptoms you will know what is wrong
