Water Problems! Thermostat?

Featured Replies

Hi all, very new to this on here so please bare with me

We have a mondeo econetic 1.8 tdci estate 2009.

Recently the coolant has been disappearing and up and till now not been able to find out where.

I've now noticed that there is a lot of dripping coming from the thermostat, if it's right this is the pic post-64823-142935745315_thumb.jpg

Firstly does this mean the Thermo stat is broken? The temp holds fine still.

Not only this but there block behind this is also very rusty and very wet, is there a possible problem here too? This is the pic again showing the best I can. post-64823-142935756747_thumb.jpg

Sorry to waffle but I'm trying to sort it without the expensive garage prices first. Many thanks in advance.

There's water, or at least a damp patch, in the second pic. The first looks dry, but one of the thermostat housing securing bolts looks rusty and that is probably a sign that water has been there, at times.

Unfortunately, I can't quite get my bearings in the second pic, so I am not sure where that is.

No. What it probably means is that the gasket/seal is bust and that you'll have to take the thermostat housing off to fix it. Some people would change the thermostat at the same time (but, if you do, use a decent one, because an old, but decent Ford one is probably a better bet than a new one of dubious quality...well, unless there is a lot of crud or some other reason to doubt the existing one).

I'm guessing that there is one leak and a jet of water is squirting from one place to the other, but then I can't tell where the second picture is, so maybe that's implausible.

Use decent antifreeze, when you top up - well, at the very least, make sure that it is compatible with the existing antifreeze.
