New Ford Mondeo - Engine Advice

Featured Replies

Hi

I am currently looking at replacing my ageing Ford Mondeo 1.8LX (05 Plate) as it is at that point where European breakdown insurance is increasing in price for less and less of a product as both the AA and RAC have said that it is too old to bring back to the UK.

As a family of four adults, full boot and roof box we drive from Lincolnshire through Holland & Germany into Austria each year and whilst the car cruises lovely at 70mph and averages 40mpg. Now I know my current car is pretty much powerless (123Hp, 170Nm torque) it struggles on the hills and you are always praying that no-one makes you loose your revs etc.

The new Mondeo is a beast and am currently trying to decide between the following two engines:

1.5 Ecoboost - 160ps, 240Nm or the 2.0 Duratorq TDCI - 150ps, 350Nm

The diesel would be the Econetic as it gives 16inch wheels rather than 17inch as standard meaning that tyres will be a little cheaper down the line.

Now apart from the major hike once a year to Austria my Monday to Friday mileage is basically 10 miles (20 minutes) from start to stop to and from work on country roads. My concern is that the diesel is not going to take kindly to this sort of mileage, although the dealer said "no problems"

I would love to throw this open to you all to hear what people think, I have only ever bought secondhand what I can afford but this will be bought as an inheritance and will be kept for probably 10 years as I do not tend to change my car often, my current one is in its 5th year with me and just sailed through its MOT.

I know the analysis of the figures is probably a little OTT but being a computer geek and wanting to not mess this up. In theory the 1.5L has 36Hp more and 70 more torque than my current car so should be fine I am getting the grumbles from my father who thinks anything less than a 2.0 is not capable etc. The last time he had a 2.0 was a Toyota Previa people carrier which was an R Reg and had a 2.4 engine.

Thanks again for peoples thoughts and ideas, spending this amount is a lot and I need to get it right as it is a 'living' inheritance so to speak.

Thanks

Paul

Why not think about a late MK 4.5 ?

Top spec, low mileage TXS for around 18k ?

The 2.2 TDCi TXS 200ps is good

Agreed, why no get a top spec version of the outgoing model. You will get much more for your money!!!
