Mondeo 6 Speed Auto Not Reading Correct Gear

not really a problem unless you say so!

in drive (D) i put it into manual and it shows gear 5 on display., so i shift it,. it then says 6.

but.. it WAS in sixth as the revs did not drop

i then drop it to 5 and revs go up . back to 6 revs drop

so. why does it falsely read 5 when it is in 6th when i switch it from auto to manual????

its the 2.0 zetec 163ps model
