Tow Bar

Featured Replies

Anyone tried fitting a tow bar to a Mondeo Titanium x sport? I have parking sensors so would like to get it done right.

I have to carry three bikes and have a tow bar mounted bike carrier. What sort of price do they fit for?

Are the roof racks for mondeos attached to the top of the open doors? Or is there another way?

Any help greatly appreciated

I just fitted a towbar to my titanium X estate when I got in from work tonight.

Fitting the towbar is simple enough but I will have a look at the electrics tomorrow. After a good noghts sleep.....Zzzzzz but

I also have sensors front and rear so might just talk with the local Auto Electrics bloke or even with the local Ford dealer...Macklin Motors.

I bought vehicle specific electrics and I think it could need expert setting up but as yet don't know.

Will keep you posted.

My Titanium X has parking sensors front and rear too. The car had a Westfalia removable towbar fitted by the previous owner. The advantage of this is that the towbar swan neck can be removed when not in use, and so not interfere with the parking sensors. When I need to use it, the towbar will interfere with the sensors unless I connect up the trailer to the electrics. It seems there is a sensor override built into the system. Not sure if other towbar systems will do the same. Worth checking, otherwise the park assist function might become useless.

Thanks guys. I have a Thule bike carrier that attaches to the towbar with electrics. Don't know if it disables the rear parking sensors. Something I need to look into.

If it's a car specific wiring loom for the towbar, then plugging in a lightboard should trigger the override. If it's a general bypass relay, then it won't

Thanks Sean.

Not sure about the X but on the Titanium, the ford system is virtually plug and play, although it has to be activated, I fitted the Westfalia detachable to my estate and their is an existing socket on the right hand rear side to plug in the Ford Tow module which also activates the antisway system within the car when a trailer is plugged in,, have not any knowledge whether it affects parking sensor tho because I don't have them . the socket lead is also plugin with a gromit to replace the existing gromitted hole at right side of tailgate behind top of bumper panel.

I've just bought a 2012 titanium x and need a towbar fitting, been quoted between £450 and £600 for a tow bar to be fitted is this the going rate?

I bought a Witter Detachable towbar for under £200 and vehicle specific electrics for about £70. Fitter the tow bar myself but I think it would be best to let an auto electrician or Ford fit the electrics.

Smirnoff, that's the sort of prices I've been quoted as well. I would like to fit a detachable tow bar so when it's not being used it doesn't spoil the look of the car.

Thanks at least I know it's the going rate then. Witter want about £588 fitted with the 13 pin electrics and software update, think I'll shop round a bit!

I think you need to decide on the two options:

1) go with the ford kit with the Ford Tow relay which includes the stabilisation feature of the car and I think auto cut out of fog lights, both active when trailer plugged in, plus activation by ford or yourself via modified ELM327,this obviously is the most expensive option, although this system is virtually plug and play plus activation (the canbus socket exists in boot side) and is a relatively easy DIY job

2) Third party fitting with tow slave relay this does give audible warning and manual cut out for fogs on car, If you can manage without the stabilisation function, this is a cheaper option, I have been towing for many years without the stability facility and have not heard any reports of whether its good or bad so its something I wouldn't miss, this system also requires running cables from one side of car to other, quite simply you pays your money and takes your Choice

Thanks for the info, prob double the price for Ford to fit! Decisions decisions!
