Info On A Couple Of Mods

I've got another question. Unrelated to all other things on this topic so far.

I bought the car with an upgraded stereo, its a jvc one. And who ever wired it in wired it to the ignition, so I can't power it when the engine is off. This never used to bother me,

However,

Now I have a job where I'm sometimes cutting the engine and waiting in the car its really starting to bug me.

How easy is it to rewire to a permanent live rather then the ignition? And how I guess is an important factor haha.

Cheers.

You just need to take the switched live wire from the stereo and plug it into the Perm live

Is this as simple as plug and play or splicing. And is there any labelling as to which is perm live or is it wire diagram time?

Thanks for getting back to me so quick Ginger flame.

They should be labelled/marked up.

You may need so crimp the two together or solder them both to the same feed.

If you struggle, post some pictures of the wiring. I can't remember the colour codes off the top of my head

Brilliant, thanks ill have a look when its daylight. And get back to you. (probably with photos haha!)

If I was doing it myself

If purchase a piggyback fuse adaptor from ebay

Link: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Add-Circuit-Fuse-Tap-Piggy-Back-MINI-Blade-Fuse-Holder-ATM-APM-12v-24v-12-volt-/180735820543?hash=item2a14b1c2ff

I'd then purchase:

Two female insulated crimp spade connectors

One Male insulated crimp connector

IMG_20130803_003810_zps0c9ce2da.jpg

And some cable:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Twin-Core-15A-amp-12V-Black-Red-DC-Power-Cable-per-2m-15-AMP-15AMP-12-Volt-/180513876557?hash=item2a07772a4d

Now cut existing power cable at rear of stereo,

Fit male spade to the bit coming from stereo

Crimp female to the ignition live feed and tape over it.

run piggyback fuse from glovebox fuseboard to the rear of stereo Crimp female spade to end.

Results being sockets providing both options

ignition live,

Permanent live,

It can then be easily reverted back to stock at later date without much bother.

I'd plug the piggyback fuse in to the interior light fuse socket,

Because this circuit stops power when the engine hasnt been run for over 60 minutes

this will protect your battery from drain in the event you ever walk away leaving it on.

Cheers for the advice again.

Looking again for headlights (never stick to one job at a time) will any H7 and H1 fit? Or is it certain types??

  • Author

Also the wattage, is 100w road legal? Or is it max 55w?

55watt is the Road Legal limit,

100watt will also burn out the contacts in the stalk control

can also melt the lens with heat.

Any H1 and H7 will fit however for optimum results Ideal NightBreaker Unlimited are recommended followed by headlight alignment

how can I check the boot door contacts? I think it may be these (as suggested) because the courtesy lights wont come on when I open the boot.

any guides on checking the contacts on a mk.2? :)

Remove the switch, check for continuity

I know I have multiple jobs going on at once here, but I'm now going back to the Stereo not powering on with the ignition, I pulled it out, and just as I expected i'm looking at these cables like I'm reading japenese.

I took photos, and will attach them to this message.

However on putting the stereo back into the housing, I hit the display button and it lit up and the time showed, yet still using the power it wont power on without the ignition? I know its not a dodgey power switch as I can switch it on/off with the ignition switched on.

Just to inform:

A triple unit is a straight swap to the existing courtesy light.

link: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/111618119830

Ooh suit you sir, suit you

Sorry to jump in,

Lenny would this be suitable to put in the rear of the vehicle also? I currently have no rear courtesy lighting but am looking to install. If this is suitable i can trim some of the roof lining to install it?

  • Author

Thanks GingerFlame.

WAZ91, It should be simple enough to install into the rear, from my knowledge I would say you could splice the current courtesy lighting cables, and run it to where you want the new light, you may have to remove the whole roof lining though to run the cable properly.

Happy to do that, Just want/ need some light in the rear to help get the little one in and out in the dark :P

for the roof light you will need to either remove the roof linig as there is a bar in the way or do what i did.

i taped up 3 cable ties (cut the ends off so it was long flat piece)

tape the power cable to this and feed it through to the courtesy light and splice into this to get your power.

i then trimmed the roof lining to fit the new light

i tried to use some electricians rods but they wouldnt get past the bar in the middle.

the triple light unit is exactly the same size as the single unit,

It takes the exact same cables too,

I've fitted a triple in the back of mine as straight swap from the single unit.

single unit came fitted as standard in 2010 Focus.

Lenny, dude. You seriously are awesome when it comes to do with things in focus's

Another thing to the list of adds, although the misses wants two?!

I reckon it'd be too chunky with two of those in the back don't you?

no problem mate,

Ive three kids myself accessories are king 🙉

great for long journeys which I do atleast one a month my family live 356km away 👍

going to grannys is a two day session😀

Do you mean two interior lights

or

both screen and interior light?

Two interior lights is really not essential

Fit led bulbs in and it will light up whole back seat with just one switched on.

IMG_20130728_195342_zps27a3a900.jpg

I've fitted both screen and interior light now and looks good together

The screen is a 10.1" HD widescreen

it's big enough for all three passengers to view quite comfortably,

Headrest screens are only 7"

You may also like to view my guide on fitting rear footwell lighting,

I fitted specifically for locating dropped toys in the dark.

as I'm sure you know the kids have there favourite items which can get dropped in footwell when they fall asleep in the car.

They then look for the particular item when they wake up in the house.

Rear footwell lighting helps to locate it imediatly

To be fair, my front footwell lighting lights up the rear at night, just enough to see down there.

But the misses doesn't want two light's, but two DVD players,

"so the two kids don't argue over the DVD"

That's her theory at least.

Whilst I remember what is the size festoon bulb I need for the single light courtesy light I have?

the one screen is big enough in my opinion but they do sell a 15" roof mount monitor aswell.

I've not changed the single centre bulb yet myself,

I think it's a T15 not 100%

  • Author

Get this, its not that its too small, but she wants one for each kid so they don't fight over it... Haha.

My solution is simpler of: You argue it goes off but hey ho.

I did attempt a new festoon bulb, ended up getting one way too small.
