New Head Unit

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Im after some information on a new head unit for my stepdads Mondeo, he has ones of those Chinese all in one jobs but is not happy with it, slow DAB drops out all the time etc (i cant tell which one it is, it was already fitted when he got the car.)

He has a Mk4 i think its a 60 plate titanium x model, it used to have the Hi level CD+AM/FM+DAB unit fitted according to Etis with BT/VC phone interface and usb too

He is still after all the toys so sat nav, DAB and blue tooth but would like to move away from the Chinese rubbish.

What have you all got, what's the best out there we are looking to spend around £400,

Could he put a standard sony unit back in to the car and just buy a sat nav or do you recommend a unit like the
Pioneer AVH-X3600DAB can you like sat nav off phone or is the pioneer AVIC-F970DAB with built in sat nav worth the extra money?

Cheers all would love some quick answers on this as Xmas is fast approaching.

EONON do some good ones, but they are a bit more pricey. Even with forum discounts when they were an approved trader, you didnt really get that much of a better deal!

That's certainly a workable approach. As you didn't fit the aftermarket HU have a look round the back to see if whoever did massacred the wiring to make it fit otherwse ths should be relatively easy (unless, again whoever has done something non-standard with antennas/speakers).

Just watch out that the original Sony units seem to be a bit overpriced, IMHO. (And early ones didn't have DAB AND THE dab antennas approach seems a bit variable).

Personally I'd rather have my sat nav from TomTom (or possibly Garmin). In any case check what you'd do for updates; for some of the Chinese units you get something that works 'out of the box' but it is unclear how you go on for updated maps/software (if it is an Android, for example, at least it is clear that you will be able to get something). Also consider traffic; some of the traffic systems are barely better than nothing, which may not matter if you don't think that's a big priority (80+% of the time I could easily live without it - I'm on roads that I know, I know where and when delays are likely, and I know the alternatives to get me out of difficulties and I'm only going 15 to 30 miles, and I don't have a deadline - the rest it is close to a life saver!).

I've got the Sony unit non DAB but has the phone, just use my Samsung Galaxy for Navigation seems bang up to date and comes through the speakers via Bluetooth
