Clutch Drops And Then Is Fine Still Has Smell

Featured Replies

A week ago now I was in slow moving traffic and driving through some floods my clutch completely dropped and lost all use of it . I had the horrible clutch smell in the car , I got recovery truck home and then later that evening went out to inspect the damage to my surprise the clutch was working again as normal and I had full use back , it has of yesterday just passed the mot with no advisorys but I stil have that clutch smell coming from the bonnet and Ac.

My questions are

1. Have a caused long term damage of the clutch

2. What caused the clutch to drop

3. Should I replace it or keep on driving

4. How do I get rid of the smell

Any help will be appreciated

Chris

How deep was the water?

When you say 'my clutch completely dropped' do you mean that the pedal has flopped to the floor, or just that the clutch is slipping, and the car no longer drives forward?

The lack of drive, if that is what it is, is probably just the clutch plates becoming saturated with water and slipping, the pedal I can't come up with an easy theory for.

As far as soggy clutch plates are concerned, you need to get them dried out, and it it sounds as if you may have just done that by leaving it for a while. If the clutch now slips, overheats, or creates a new smell, then that is still a problem. Perhaps the water that you drove through was a little polluted, and when the clutch gets hot you smell it.

If I'm right, you won't do any more harm by driving it gently and getting it dried out, but I could be wrong about what is going on, so be cautious.
