Dash Cam Power Supply

Featured Replies

I have a 2014.5 titanium x sport estate . I got a dash cam for xmas but as the 12v accessorie sockets are permanently live this means that I can't fit it to the vehicle and forget about it as this would probably discharge the battery... Other vehicles accessorie sockets go live when ignition is turned on like my works van which have the cameras permanently plugged in and they start recording when ignition is turned on.

Does anyone on the forum use a dash cam and if so do you have to plug it in every time you start a journey or is there a work around .... Feedback is appreciated

Alan

I have mine plugged into the 12v socket in front of the gearstick. It is not a permanant live, it does stay live for around 45 mins after the ignition is off. The camera draws about. 2A tops so shouldn't discharge the battery. I did want to tap into a fuse using piggy back but couldn't find one suitable.

If you find one I'd be interested to know which one so I could use it.

I did have a dash cam until Christmas day when some thieving opportunist git tried my car door (which I stupidly left unlocked) and swiped it. (Rant over)

As Jon said the power stays live for about 45 minutes after locking the car so your battery should be ok but I would check with ford to be sure this is the case with the newer models.

You can't have anything these days, fecking criminal!

My car is a 2015 and I can confirm the power definitely goes off somewhere between 30-60 mins after removing the key. I plugged a charger in with an indicator light on it so I could see from the outside if it went out and it did. Unlocking the doors does not put the power back to the socket which I thought it might, the key must be turned to ignition on.

Considering a rear view cam too, for this I would tap into the rear wiper wiring which I believe is switch live.

161 how did you power your dash cam?

Plugged it in to the power supply in front of the gear lever. I was planning to find a fused source at some point but obviously some git saved me the problem.

Just a point on rear camera. I am waiting on an EONON android head unit being delivered with a reversing cam as a feebee with the unit. I don't think it records but will update when fitted.

Was on special on christmas day.

I believe it will keep most of the functions I currently have but once again the devil will be in the fitting.

Update to follow.

Looks like a good unit, I have the Sync2 so I don't think I would change mine but I'd consider that one if I was in the market.

Thanks for the replies guys.... my mondeo is the mk4 not the new style so i will need to do a check as when I unlock the doors the sockets are live without putting ignition on (push start button ) so to see if it does go off i will have to plug in the lead then lock the doors and periodically check to see if still on .... may also check with my ford dealer

Thanks again for your replies
