that occurs naturally within a lead acid battery

Call the Environmental Woke Police ... theres a man with a LEAD acid battery ----  Red Alert Captain !!!!!!!!!!!!!   🤣

Don't you know you could be transported to Austrailia for owning anything lead these days.

I can see that a solar panel may just keep things ticking over, but I would have thought it needed to be a bit bigger than that

4.8 Watts would be 300 milliamps at 12 Volts. Even assuming half output and 12 hours a day, it would still be perfectly adequate.

Could it be left plugged in all the time i.e when car is running?

They say to unplug before starting the car.

It just tops the battery up, even if it just stops your alarm draining the battery its wotth it.

Thought as much. may still be useful for someone using car infrequently but short run daily drivers could become a faff unplugging it constantly. Is there any on the market that can be left plugged in?

You don't have to unplug the OBD the panel has a connector in the cable

For £30 you can buy them on eBay with a charge controller so that you can hardwire them in. Intended for motorhomes but could be used on a car.

You don't need to keep it connected, its only for when your not using your car for a few days, I haven't had mine plugged in for a week now as i'm using the car if the Stop/Start stops working and i'm not using the car for a few days  i'll reconect it.

I know, but the question asked by @cjay1are there ones that can be left pluged in all the time. His point being that it is a faff on, having to keep connecting and disconnecting. So the answer is yes you can buy systems that can be left connected all the time if thats what he would prefer.

Put the battery on charge for a full 24 hours. No need to disconnect or remove the battery from the car. Connect the positive lead of the charger to the battery positive terminal. Connect the negative lead of the charger to the earth point on the body - do NOT connect it to the negative of the battery.

After a full charge and a 5 - 10 mile dirive the S/S will begin working again. Expect it will then work for about 4 - 6 weeks and then repeat the process all over again. Unless you do long daily runs without stuff like headlights and heated windows on then you have almost no chance of keeping S/S working.

Certain parameters have to be met. First battery has to be of correct type, so has it been changed at some point ?

Think it dependent on make but generally - all doors shut, seat belt on, AC and heated screens off and of course fully charged and correct battery.

This is to ensure battery has enough power to complete it's task.

heated rear screen and ac can be left on but may reduce the frequency of ss activation but will still work if cabin is at set temperature. its best to replace a battery with the same but you can change the battery as long as you tell the car the new battery type and capacity using forscan (agm or efb).

a battery monitoring reset may get ss working again

reset as follows

1 make sure the battery is charged to above 12.4v (recommended)

2  ignition on for 10 seconds

3 press fog light button 5 times

4 press hazard light button 3 times

battery light flashes. job done

It won't until the battery is fully charged. The best way to do this is to drive the car for a couple of hundred miles. I have never known this to fail.

Or see post 25 and save some petrol...

Have to say, my car is hit and miss with the auto stop start but in the Mrs Mhev, it is faultless although rarely used.

Same with my MHEV. Stop start works within 30 seconds of starting.

Is there a reason not to use it?

It can be a pain in slow moving traffic where you only stop for seconds (thats where hybrids that can run a while on electric would be good), but I think its main aim is to reduce emissions rather than fuel economy.

Yes but it is the air I breathe in my town so I am all for it. The quiet at the lights is welcome, too

Yes, i find it a bit pointless stopping and starting in slow moving traffic and to be honest I very rarely put the gear stick in neutral and press the brake etc. I Just use clutch and brake in slow moving traffic. No real need to stop and start the engine continually.
