New battery now fuel gauge erratic

Yesterday I fitted a new battery to my Mondeo 05 plate 2l petrol after 11 years of use. I maintained power so lost no radio code or PCM info.

But on refilling tank today I noticed fuel gauge still on quarter full - after filling the tank full.

After five miles the gauge read half full. No sign of fuel gauge problems in my 10 year ownership of car. Is this linked to new battery? 

Any ides anyone?
