I've got the same engine on a MK2 Focus & the short black 90 degree pipe to the left of the EGR valve has a habit of fracturing.  I replacement mine with a silicone hose & 3 years on it's still going strong.

If you get someone to rev the engine to about 2500 rpm to spool up the turbo, have a listen in the engine bay & use your fingers to run around the undersides of the pipes.  Even if the split is tiny you'll feel a bit of air being blown onto your hand/fingers (assuming the issue is a split hose).

Turbo's on the 1.8 TDCI don't have a reputation for blowing up, although like any turbo a decent supply of reasonably clean oil is vital to maximising it's lifespan.  So if the last owner has only done an oil change every 3 years, that won't have done the turbo any good.
