Mk2 1.8TD valve-to-piston clearance

Featured Replies

Had the timing belt fail on our old family Mk 2 1.8 diesel Mondeo...

Surprisingly, when this happened, there was no bang/clatter (or any loud noise really). It was just like someone had turned the ignition off (although obviously being a diesel it doesn't really have an "ignition" as such!)

So I'm wondering if anyone knows if the old 1.8TD has enough clearance between the valves and the pistons that the engine can just freewheel when this happens? (Rather than the general expensive valve bending unpleasantness that happens when pistons hit the valves). If this is the case, it's probably worth spending the couple of £100 to replace the belt and keep the old "bus" going for a few more years yet.

Either way, I've learned my lesson about changing belts on time - this was 20,000 miles past due...

Thanks!
