2010 MONDEO tdci STUCK IN PARK

Hi all,  i have a 2010 mondeo tdci auto, its stuck in park , i know how to pull it out by lifting the surround up but it clunks into reverse and drive and now its stuck in one gear, ive checked the brake lights and they are working so guess it cant be the brakelight switch, though i  think it does more than just put the lights on , am i correct ?.  and when i put it back into park i again its stuck, is this a gear box problem or sensor, i cant understand why its stuck in one gear, like its in limp mode,  ant ideas would be gratefully received,
