  6. Sounds like you activated the courtesy lights. After getting out the car push the stalk as if putting high beam on. You'll hear a beep. This means they are on and stay on for about 30 seconds before going off. It was implemented to help you find your way after stopping, such as pulling onto a driveway - simply activate them and lights stay on whilst you get your key to open the door for example. They turn off automatically after 30 seconds.

  7. Hi to all and thanks in advance for all help /advice received. Is it possible to upgrade the standard 1.6i duratec engine in my 53 plate streetka to a more powerful 2.0l unit ? If so would the conversion be straight forward ? What, if any , obstacles would their be ? Adjustments to be made ? Thanks kindest Regards joe

  11. Ouch, I (almost!) feel your pain. It is a bit of a come down after a 36 mile walk over the weekend! I tried following it on Google, but got exhausted doing that , though Google was not great for footpaths. I had to use the http://www.geograph.org.uk/showmap.php?gridref=Sz157970 map system that gives limited access to all the OS maps from 10inch, via 50,000, 25,000 to 10,000 scales. Though an old fashioned paper 25,000 OS map would have been better, I think I have one somewhere. If I had done anything like that, I would not be able to walk for a week. Perhaps tiredness was a factor in tearing the muscle or tendon. Pipper may be getting a bit worried: new owner, lovely long walk, now her walks must be a bit curtailed! But I expect she has at least some understanding, animals can often sense pain and emotions in people. Hope it gets better soon.

  20. I don't like I had immense difficulty getting and out of the Mk1, both this morning going to the physio and again this afternoon, at Tesco. Added to which it's my throttle and braking leg that has limited movement, and there was congestion to deal with in places. Stop start traffic and limited movement equals a fair amount of pain. It sort of makes you appreciate that normally your legs work and you don't even think about it. I also don't like the black Renault Clio, who parked so close to me in Tesco car park, I couldn't get Pipper out for her post-shop pee and had to reach across the whole back seat, on my left leg, whilst trying not to involve my right leg, nor to fall over, to release her safety belt. That's appalling My cheapo 99p trainers lasted almost a year

  21. I do like getting the Focus' N/S/F tyre replaced this afternoon... To say the old one was a "little worn" would be an understatement. Fortunately I had a spare Nokian from the other Focus which was the right size, so it'll do for now until I replace both for a matching pair. The current O/S tyre is still OK for another few thousand miles.

  26. Hi, I've recently bought my 2001 focus Ghia 1.8, the factory fitted stereo has been working fine until I had the car washed and valleted today, now it doesn't switch on at all, I've checked fuses under the bonnet but they're all OK, are there any fuses elsewhere? Back of stereo for instance? Thanks

  27. its possible but unlikely as I've never seen a policy declaration that lists number or age of children , usually they just ask if you are married or single etc. to do so would be skirting on the wrong side of discrimination laws in my opinion and trying to base insurance risk on what passengers you may or may not carry at any given time is too big a variable and wholly impractical

  28. You have to look in the menus. Pretty sure it's in the dash menu and not on the screen menus. Settings-Vehicle-Lighting-Headlamp delay-off, 10s, 20s, 120s or something like this. Hope this helps.

  38. I have only done this a few times with almost cold water on the previous Focus which lacked Quick Clear and that was in desparate situations. I'd never do it on a car that I care about or where an alternative (such as Quick Clear or simply starting the engine and letting it defrost naturally) is available. It is asking for trouble and will eventually result in the windscreen cracking as it has in this case. It is especially dangerous if you already have a chipped windscreen, as that will crack a lot easier.

  39. From what I understand, limp mode is when the engine restricts itself in some way when it detects a fault to prevent damage. It's like a safety mechanism i guess. Somebody else on here could probably give you a better technical definition than me........

  43. Depends who's car and how much they want to spend lol. a car I've looked after for a friend and kept on the road for the last 10 years now has nearly 110k miles on the clock and I've used cheap crossland filters from ECP most of the time. It's a paper element type not a canister and I can honestly say they look no better or worse than Bosch, Mann etc upon fitting or removal. That said, I've also never had any trouble with Crossland air and pollen filters. I've had trouble with some Bosch filters not fitting in the past though!

  48. One where all your mods are declared and covered. i take it you're asking who to go with, go for a specialist insurer, they may cost more but the mods will be covered properly. Try, greenlight, brentacre, Sky, Chris Knott, Adrian flux, some need you to be over 21.

  49. After reading much about the wonderful 1.6 tdci engine I compiled a list of things I wanted to do to help try and minimise the risks associated with it and its turbo. One of the things I read about was the breather pipe dumping oil in to the intercooler and eventually working up in to the inlet manifold. At best this oil degrades the efficiency of the intercooler, at worst it can contribute to carbon deposits in the sump, turbo and inlet manifold binding with soot from the EGR. I decided on fitting an oil catch can, designed to be a closed loop system. The oil passes in to the can as vapour, is held with a special mesh, condensed in to a liquid and collects in the base of the can where it can be drained. The tricky bit was the size of the breather outlet, on the 1.6tdci your looking at a 22 mm diameter breather, you will need to keep it this wide or risk restricting the breather system working, other engines are likely smaller. I couldn't find anyone in the UK selling a can to my spec so a mate of mine suggested this chap from the states. http://www.saikoumichi.com/s3_oil_catch_can.html This is the model I ordered, guy was really helpful and there is plenty of room to customise. Finding a location to install it was a pain, this car is tight, I found I nice wee spot under the airbox. The next fun bit was plumbing it in, there's even less room to route 26mm silicone tubes around the car than I had realised! eventually the following got it working. 2x25mm ID 90 degree silicone bends 1x25mm ID 135 degree silicone bend 1mx25mm ID of reinforced silicone tube (must be reinforced or it will bend) 4x26mm OD aluminium joiners 1x30mm OD aluminium Joiner 14x Jubilee clips a long bolt, approx 10cm, some washers and a nut to match Fairly basic setup From breather, Hose down to 90 bend then to can. Can out to 90 bend, 6 inches of hose up to side of battery box, 135 degree bend, hose back to intake pipe. This pic was before I installed 135 degree bend, originally as in the pic, I used another 90, but as you can see, it comes up to high which prevents the engine cover going on and slightly kinks one of the tubes, 135 and its perfect allowing the pipe from the breather outlet to go above the return pipe. After a few days driving, it had collected this. after about 2000 miles I had about 7ml of oil! ill try get some ebay links and prices up later on along with some newer pictures. That was her today, ill take out the airbox and remove the engine cover tomorrow and get some clearer pictures.
