Ebay Question

Evening all,

Am currently selling a fairly new laptop on eBay.

I've had a question from a member asking whether I have the original receipt and if I can send them a copy of it prior to purchase.

I have responded informing thim I have retained the sales receipt from PCWorld. I have no intention of sending any receipts prior to bids/sale being agreed.

The seller has mentioned he wants the receipt for the guarantee. I'm skeptical in that he's hoping to return it to a store for a full refund of my original purchase price.

I have not mention in the listing the receipt is part of the sale.

Where do I stand on this? Am obliged to provide a buyer/potential buyer with proof of purchase or should I simply tell the seller (in the event he breaks the device) to send the manufacturer a copy of his eBay RECEIPT proving purchase?

They would need the receipt if there was a problem with it later on and needed to be fixed under warranty.

If it was me I would take a pic of the receipt, blank out enough to make it useless but leave enough to prove it belongs to the laptop, and send him the pic.

When/if he buys it send it with the laptop.

Agreed, I would send him some of it, on the basis of showing the receipt, but remove the card details.

I would then contact PC World support for their advice in exchanging warranty, as I am fairly sure laptop warranty is not transferable. However if there is manufacturing warranty left, I would send them a scan of the receipt with card details removed and also a typed note of "Selling during valid warranty, this receipt is for warranty purposes only, not to be used for refund".

That should cover both elements, as the store will not honour a refund under this premise, and you would be able to tell the eBay buyer this is a condition of sale.

I have checked the PC World returns policy and it transpires they do not offer a refund for products purchased in store which have been opened or used.

Only if you buy online are you entitled to a full refund so it seems regardless of whether he has a receipt or not, he can't get a refund on the item anyway.

I would give him the obscured receipt for the purpose of warranty claim should it be necessary. I would let him know in his message that you will send it for this reason, but to be aware they will not offer a refund on the product (Say you have been stung by this before or something! if he is genuine he wont be offended)

It seems like a strange request but I would probably send them a copy of the receipt if it doesn't show anything like card details (blank that part out). What they do after buying the laptop is entirely up to them. As long as you follow eBay's rules I wouldn't worry about it.

I've yet to hear back from the potential buyer since last night. Guess he's lost interest. Will keep the thread updated either way.
