went to garage , they plugged in there code reader . these faults appeared - PCM (power train control module fault 6 ) , GEM (generic electronic module fault 2 ) . they deleted the engine light in the dash , car ran perfectly for a day and a half , engine warning light came back on . car still ran well  apart from a few coughs and splutters . will be running the car tommorrow , will see if it is still running smoothly .

beginning to think the ECU is faulty , but i have noticed it is using a bit of water . not sure if that maybe part of the problem.

Sadly neither of those are useful codes.  OBD codes should be in the format of something like P0299.  That's what we would need to diagnose any further.  Unless you try Forscan which will give far more indepth codes than most garage scanners.

Was there any rust around the spark plugs when replaced?  The core plugs can come loose on this engine and leak coolant around the spark plugs and leads which can cause rough running until they dry out.

ok thanks.

never noticed any corrision around the spark plugs , there was no sighn of any fluid , will check again though .

the header tank isnt bubbling over and the oil on the dipstick looks clean , so i dont think it is the head gasket .

It's probably not a core plug leak then.  That is usually very noticeable when you remove the spark plugs.

Did you ever check for a split in the oil breather pipe under the inlet manifold?

I know I said it was unlikely before we're running low on options.

I take it the garage didn't write down the proper fault codes?  Having those would really help us diagnose.

ok. didnt see any fluids on the rocker cover , so i presume there is no leak . still using a lttle water .

once the garage deleted the engine warning light , the car ran perfectly . i believe you need to delete the codes or the ecu still thinks there is  problem , even after you replace the faulty part . no they didnt give me me the codes.

strangly , the engine warning light came back on about 40mins after being deleted . i have been running the car for over 2 weeks now with the warning light on , and the car is running fine...

so dont know what to do .

With respect, you've been told what to do already.  Get Forscan.

That will allow us to diagnose the fault over the internet using accurate fault codes and even live data if needed.  And will allow you to read and clear the codes yourself whenever necessary.

You can just ignore the warning light while the engine runs fine.  But it will fail MOT for the light on eventually.  So the choice then is either paying garage rates for diagnostics to get it through MOT, or paying a few quid for a Forscan adapter to diagnose and repair it before MOT.

I don't see how we can offer any more help remotely without at least having the fault codes to give us a rough idea of which area the fault lies in.
