Luxury Hatchbacks - Focus Vignale Equivalents?

I can't believe we are talking about electric vehicles!!! How times have changed.

With the journeys I make (14 miles each way to work and a bit of local driving at weekend ) an electric would work for me , only need to charge maybe 1 night a week on the drive.  Got partner's fiesta for the rare longer journey.

But I'm still a long way off going in that direction .

  • Yeah, this is why I make a lot of posts but don't generally make threads! I'm terrible at taking advice, keep changing my mind and doubting myself constantly... There is some good news tho

  • Toms-tranny or trannytom😂😂😂😂

  • Something a little less boring with compliant suspension. 😂😂😂

Yeah, keeping an eye on the figures myself. I reckon it would work for the majority of our general use, which is normally only a few miles a day and we could easily recharge overnight at home. The exceptions are places we frequently visit/stay overnight (when there's no pandemic!) which would stretch the range and where there are no charging facilities at present.

That should change fairly rapidly though as the charging network develops, so I can see us moving to at least one of our cars being electric within a few years.

Apart from the price of course. Quite like what I've read about the latest Corsa-e, for instance, but that currently  starts around £28k.

Yeah. realistically I don't think I'd want to go full electric just yet, as I said earlier the infrastructure just isn't there yet.  And the prices are daft...an electric Corsa or 208 costs more than a petrol Focus or Golf! 😮

https://www.edfenergy.com/electric-cars/leasing  worth a browse.

And with leasing the list price is less important than the depreciation, the monthly payment is all you care about.

Yes, good point Guy. With electric technology (hopefully) rapidly evolving, I wouldn't want to be buying one, at least for the present. Deal on the EDF site for the Corsa I mentioned is around £260pm for 48 months, + about £2300 initial payment. Would think you could do better still with a shop around.

Obviously we can compare costs, range, charging time etc, but it's a shame there's no network of places where you can try various electrics before you shop around, just to get a "feel" for it. I could go for a normal dealer test drive I know, but with 50+ years of ICE driving I've got no idea of what would constitute a "good" or "bad" electric car from the driving perspective, other than the basic comfort, functionality, handling etc.

Aye, I've never even been a passenger in an ev, let alone had a drive of one.

Anyone got any ideas why my focus keeps jumping out of 6th now and then would it need a rebuild

I would start a separate thread bud.

I've just been made aware of another Ford Finance Option...where you pay for the first 2/3 years in one go so there are no monthly payments.  You can then choose the pay a final payment at the end if you want to keep it.  Might work better for my situation.  They don't offer an online calculator for it though.  Does anyone know if it's the same price as PCP would be?

No, seen that and it's a bit thin on detail on the Ford site. It looks as if you have to configure the car and then request a quote based on estimated mileage etc. Or just have a chat with a dealer.

I remember when I bought a Land Rover they offered something similar  - 50% down, then nothing for 2 years when the balance was due. At the  time they were offering 0% for the initial 2 years. I didn't go for it and got a big discount for cash instead (those were the days).

The surprisingly candid salesman told me that lots of people were jumping for it as they could get into a new LR just by paying half. The sting was when the second payment was due and they didn't have the cash, so if they needed to refinance the balance that would be at a substantial rate of interest.

They certainly seem more eager to push the PCP...even with 0% APR and £1000 contribution, there can't be much left in it for them!

If this scheme works out as the same price, just all in one lump rather than spreading payments, that would work out better for me specifically, though I can't imagine there are many other people that could do it nowadays.  I don't intend to keep the car after the 3 years, MHEV and potentially Vignale means lots of expensive stuff to start going wrong just outside of the warranty period, plus it'll be due 4 tyres and MOT etc at 3 years old so if it's just a few hundred pounds equity left then it would be lost through that.  I will have to ask for a quote on the 'cashplan' when the dealer gets back to me about any pre-built models.  I don't think will be any as I'm not sure they've even fitted the 155ps to these yet, all of the new Actives on Autotrader seem to be 125's. :g:

Think you will probably find it's the "supply n demand" crap deals on the cars people want but slightly better deals on the ones they are struggling to shift.

Yes, this has seemed a bit weird to me for years. We have lots of folk on here who seem to have bought a 125 because it was available and a good deal, but would have preferred a 140/155. I can't see there'd  be much difference to Ford production wise, so I wonder why they churn out 125s?

I'm not even sure if there are any physical differences between the two MHEVs?  It costs an extra £500 RRP for the 155 on the Active but that does of course include the multilink as well.

I guess it may be cheaper to bulk buy 125's to fill in the production gaps between ordered cars maybe...?

I'm still not sure about the multilink? Same gap between 125 and 155 on the Fiesta and they're all torsion beam of course.

Now that's interesting...I've just tried a Vignale (which should all have Multilink) and the engine price is the same!

Another point to note is that Vignales cost less to paint!  Magnetic costs £700 for an Active X, but only £450 for an Active Vignale!

Regarding multi-link, from the cars I've been able to reg check on ETIS, all Active Vignales have multilink.  All Active estates have multilink.  But on the Active X hatch only the 155ps MHEV and the diesels have multilink.  EDIT - Hang on...just realised the only 155 I could find to check is an estate! 🤦‍♂️  Can anyone find a registered 155 that isn't the red estate ending in XSX??  This may end up forcing me into the Vignale after all!

Firstvehicleleasing have some good deals on EVs at the moment

I was just thinking more on the 125/155 thing. I suppose what they build reflects the overall sales profile. I keep forgetting that most people on here are, if not petrolheads, at least fairly interested in cars.

Most buyers are probably like a friend of mine who decided 125 was quite adequate so why pay more, even if it's only the same as the cost of metallic. When he swapped his Focus for a Volvo V40, he again went for the T2 (125 approx) version, even though the T3 (150) was only a bit more.

It's an interesting debate.  Even the missus 100ps Fiesta can cruise happily at 70 fully occupied and it doesn't struggle so yes, why do we need more?

That said, when I get back in the Focus with nearly double that, I like it.

I keep asking myself why do I want a last fast(ish) car when I know I can't legally use even the potential of my Fiesta? Just like the feeling of having it, I suppose. I can sort of understand the Americans who just like the feeling of toting a 44 Magnum or whatever even though they (well, most of them, at least) have no intention of shooting anyone!😀

No one really cares about top speed over here...as you say, most normal cars can cruise at 70 fine.  And many of us rarely get the chance to hit 70 nowadays anyway.

The 'thrill' is in the torque...booting it off the line or pushing out of a corner on a B road for example...  And I must admit, that's why I still like FWD diesel...3rd gear boot off of a roundabout is always a bit of fun.

Yes, for me the biggest luxury a car can have is the feeling of effortless acceleration.  Which is why I like autos and why EVs interest me.

If it wasn’t for the suspension I’d say get the ST. 😛

If it wasn't for the wife I'd get an x308 jaguar xj 4.2 V8 😃
