2019 Highbeam not working occasionally

Featured Replies

Hi All,

I have a 2019 focus vignale. It doesnt have the full adaptive headlights just the standard led.

Sometimes high beam doesnt work at all the blue light comes up on the dash but the intensity of lights do not change. (flashing, turning on and auto highbeam none of them work)  Turning the ignition off and on and it starts working again. Its also started coming up on the dash check adaptive headlights when starting the car (again not every time)

Ive booked it in for diagnostics but was wondering if any mechanics had any idea what might be happening?

Thanks,

Daniel

It shouldn't be saying "check adaptive headlamps" when you have fixed LED fitted.

Sounds like a software issue.

Make sure they update the BCM and the camera module as well as the headlamp module (HCM) (If fixed LEDs have one)

Hi Dave

Thanks for that. They go up and down (auto level i think) but the full adaptive turn also I believe they don’t do that.

Thanks

.... if it has auto activation of high beam (on and off) check,

1) if the windscreen's dirty, the sensor may not like it,

2) if you are under 30 mph some car's won't enable high beam,  as its not supposed to be used round town,

3) is it finding a light source, like a security light on a house when you go round corners, and thus deciding you should crash rather than see where you are going

4) its got high beam assist, but its not set to A in the blue tell-tail warning to indicate its in adaptive mode (not all brands show the A)

the best bit is the total white-out at T junctions on country lanes... when the lights flare up from reflective road signs and it blinds you, then you have to drive round the corner in total darkness and accelerate completely blind to get fast enough for it to switch to main beam before you can see where you're going

its one of the most dangerous features I've come across...

if none of the 4 points seem to be the reason yours is wrong look for software updates - then disable it and drive properly - if you want your lights to function safely

Still having issues with this intermitently.

Managed to catch it last night and plugged in Forscan to get error codes.

Looks like alot of error codes seems like an electrical issue. I only noticed this happening after the wiring loom recall work had been completed.

Going back in for diagnostics but as usual this morning the lights are functioning correctly and no error codes being produced.

Dealer has done a battery reset and all modules updated but still having the issue.

Anyone got any ideas? Still find it strange myself that it says Adaptive headlights when they are not true adaptive (they just go up and down)

does the blue light on the auto warning light just indicate the system for auto switching is enabled?

its illegal to operate below 30mph and most only set it to switch above 40mph - which is plain stupid as unlit country lanes are just as dark at 10mph as they are at 150mph, the whole idea is a dangerous mistake...

Hi Botus (and others).

Are you saying that you can't dip the headlights manually on some models?

Mine is a 2013 with auto high beam and I can manually switch dip/main even with auto high beam enabled (so I don't experience the dangerous scenarios that you describe),

But have they actually updated the modules? They may say they have, but as they don't get paid by Ford to do it, unless there's an actual fault, they won't

Yet another thread to reinforce my view that driver knows best! Thank goodness I'll be dead by the time 'driverless' cars will be prevalent and forums littered with, "my car killed my pet yesterday on reversing out of driveway because the sensor didn't see it, do I need a software update?" 😁

That's just silly 😮 who reverses out of their driveway 😄

I don't know how ford set the switch.... I know on my Mk 2 they did it back to front which is offensive (manual on off only)

On my BM with auto lights, you could leave auto enabled, but you had to double flash the lights to change to the setting you needed (when auto was its usual uselessness), that was more offensive than doing it properly like a grown up.  So I turned it off within a week of getting the car and NEVER used auto irritate again.  And oddly the high beam was set perfectly when I did it, never made a mistake again

there's another post on this - may as well have same -  other issues this woeful mess brings

  • auto switching of conventional lights to high beam is awful

it is uncanny how it can see tail lights and switch down perfectly and usually manages to dip for on coming, but that is the bit any normal human can judge and mange easily and do it better anyway...

then we get to situations where its necessary to have it how the driver needs in the moment.  And this is the catastrophe of the automatic disaster they fit

1) driving along and for what ever reason even though dipping the lights would be considerate for oncoming drivers it necessary for you to leave on high beam to enable you to see / control the car safely.  Auto dip dangerous / potentially deadly

2) driving on unlit country roads, come upon a T junction (where you give way) the reflective sign flares up and you can't see a dammed thing, then you turn on to the main unlit road almost completely blind and have to accelerate past the min speed for the auto switching to operate to get the high beam on to see where you are going.  Auto dip dangerous / potentially deadly

3) narrow twisty road, the car sensor picks out the front door or security light on a building and dips high beam just as you need to navigate a tricky bend with nasty curbs and there was never any road user there to dip for.  Auto dip dangerous / potentially deadly

So you disable it and drive safely forever more....

  • auto switching of expensive self morphing LED lights

Only used on a VW, utter crap, doesn't switch on after coming out of a village so fly blind for half a mile, ***** dangerous, twice forgot to dip for on coming traffic, and as above spotted the security light on a home 100 yards from the road and I lost visibility of the dangerous bend I was trying to get round safely

Agree fully with the comment about software updates....

we did an update sir = of course we didn't bother doing that, I won't get any personal benefit and it involves effort now f off..

Hi All OP here,

My issue is that my highbeam does not work at all when the issue occurs. I cannot flash the headlights or turn them on to manual the blue light comes on on the dash but the headlights do not change. Normal beam works fine all the time. This is not a auto highbeam issue as they do not work on manual over ride or pulling the stalk to flash someone.

When this occus the car has to be restarted to solve the issue.

The experience has been fustrating to say the least so far to the point i'm considering getting rid of the vehicle and not getting another ford (although I have had many in the past)

The garage has had the vehicle for a few weeks but been unable to resolve the issue and ford customer service have been useless to the point im considering getting the motor ombondman or legal advise.

Does anyone have any contact details of someone higher up than customer service as I would like to get this resolved. I have had the car for a year now and had this issue for 6 months without a resolution on an approved used vechicle with ford direct warranty I find that unacceptable to wonder if my high beam will work!

Also another issue now occuring the top coating is coming off the alloy wheels.

Thanks

Hi,

Has somebody changed or uprated the H1 high beam bulbs?

I did mine and everything stopped working. So had to go back to standard

Hi,

Thanks for reply.

Unfortunately both full headlights were swapped at one point for the ones on another vehicle (as apparently the control module for them is in the headlight) in the garage but the issue percisted. So unfortunately highly doubt its bulbs.

Thanks

Ah, so they are LED then?

You need to be more specific.

Are they fixed or Adaptive?

Sounds like the units are faulty again.

Just try disconnecting the battery for 10 minutes before you do anything else and see if that sorts it.

  • Author

Hi

they are LED but not fully adaptive, this kind.

image.thumb.png.d128cfc90eeaa2c7eb211c24b4d5d158.png

They were swapped for ones that worked fine on another vehicle when the issue percisted they were swapped back.

Did this issue ever get solved? My car is playing up with a similar issue - exact same trim level too

I just realise my first reply didn't really add much as I was going off my experience of Auto dip and the posts title - not the fault condition you wrote.

this is clearly a dangerous safety issue and needs fixing - a dealership must never fob off a safety issue - this need to go on watchdog and a formal complaint to ford

the fix must be a faulty component and or a software glitch - and fixed under warranty - dealer's are very lazy applying much needed software fixes to cars and many ham-fisted "technicians" are not competent to do things correctly

I'd be getting a loan car and leave the car with then (having videoed the condition of every body panel, bumper, bit of trim, door mirror and wheel very thoroughly) and not take the car till they give a printout of exactly what was changed and what software was applied
