Fiesta / Fusion performance modifications

Featured Replies

I know I am posting this in the wrong section but I hope these are similar enough to get relevant pointers form the Fiesta's crowd. I am also sure I will get a better response here.

I have an old 53 plate Fusion. Its a 1.6 manual low mileage example that for reasons explained in an another I am stuck with for now. I know this is less than ideal base for a fun car but this is what I have and I am sure with a few well spent quid I am going to be able to have some fun with it. I am sure this will not end up being a ST beater but this is not the point and not the goal.

This is what I would like to know:
- can I upgrade front discs and pads for something better (does it have discs at the back?)
- are there any off the shelf braided hoses available?
- are there any lowering springs/dampers available?
- I am sure there will be some polly bushes for Fiestas, would these fit the Fusion?

Other than that I would throw in a better seat and gut the interior a little bit maybe cold air intake. I doubt there is any point to mapping it so that is not really on the cards.

Your input on the above would be appreciated. Any ideas on top of that would be also greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Greg

Yes you probably can, but unless you have some cheapo garbage on there now you're unlikely to make a noticeable difference to the braking performance. The car doesn't go fast enough to burn the brakes out lol.

You tell us haha, it would've took you longer to write that sentence than to take a quick peak out of the window and see for yourself.

Oh Luke !  Here is one sorely offended Fusion 1.6 Titanium owner !  Built for the elderly, not for Speed!!!!  And a wheel chair or walking frame fit better in the Fusion than my 2008 Focus !!  And seats are just the right height for Mum in law ! (I had to get that in unless you thought it was me that was old!!!)

It does only have rear drums and small discs at the front, but I'm fairly sure all the FIesta ST running gear will fit.  And no point in mapping it.

First thing I would do (apart from a service, inc plugs/filters) is inspect the expansion tank for cracks, I have changed this on both the Fusion and Fiesta Zetec S, cheap and simple to change.

I am not worried about it burning through brakes. What I would like is for it to actually slow down when I press the pedal. I do not need to go really fast to have fun. I need to stop to stay alive and this is the biggest issues as it stands. There is no braking power at all.

I use bike to get to and from work so I do not have an opportunity to look at it during the week.

This may be the way to go. I would rather get the ST for the track but this is part of the problem. I can't sell the Fusion.

I will look into options here.

looks like H&R Springs 25mm will fit part no. 29290-1

not sure about induction kits, but there seems to be a few pannel filters around, green, bmc, kn, pipercross etc

and why not just get some oem disks on the front like brembo and get some tarox strada pads if they fit SP0450.112..and get the breaks bled at the same time

and...powerflex bushes for you

Turbo conversion 👀👀😀

Do you know what pads you have on now? There's only so far you can go by changing brands in terms of braking performance. The high end motorsport pads aren't chosen just because of their good stopping power, it's also a lot to do with endurance. Once at the correct temperature, they're designed to keep stopping the car without setting on fire or causing brake fade.

If you're desperate to stop quicker then you're better looking at bigger discs, pads and therefore calipers (and a rear disc conversion).

If you're struggling stopping the car (particularly doing normal driving), then something is wrong and it's not just a matter of upgrading parts to fix it (although it may be the case you can kill two birds with one stone, if you get my meaning?).

The best way of gaining speed on a low powered, naturally aspirated engine is to lose weight (and I don't mean you personally 😂😂). The rear seats, boot trim, and carpets are usually the first to go. This has the added bonus of turning your car into a van pretty much!

I am not sure what's wrong with the setup right now. I would say it's at the lower end of adequate when it comes to every-day-driving stopping power. Pads are the obvious starting point.

Rear seats, carpets, plastics will all go. That's certain. Indeed, it becoming a van will be a bonus.

Thanks.

I will look these up.

Better discs, pads and braided hoses would be my preferred route. Just not sure how rear drums would cope?

Is there any easy disc conversion that would not need too much work on these?

Hopefully the reduced weight will also help a little bit.

Powerflex bushes will be a great addition too.

I have a 1.6 ti vct with 120bhp and i needed new disks and pads, i just got oem brembo disks on the front and tarox strada pads and had the breaks bled and it made a difference with the stock drums and shoes on the back.

So far I got the following:
- Set of Brembo shoes and cylinders.
- Vented, front discs from ATE (I do like their quality).
- Yellowsuff pads.
- Set of HR springs.

Once these arrived and once I had a chance to fit them I will take a look at removing the cat and changing the air box as the original one looks restrictive. It will not be quick but I want it to be pleasurable (I want it to sound good and to be nice to drive).  I do not want the exhaust to be any louder so I will leave the silencer in, I would like to hear the induction a little bit more. Then at the end I will go for the easiest of all mods. Tyres on some wider steelies or set of something lightweight before gutting the rear of the Fusion.

The project is on!

Oh.. I forgot about the hoses.

These are on their way now too.

if your looking at induction ie. pannel filter or cone filter, then change the intake hose that goes from the air box, not sure about the fusion how many bends are in it the stock one etc but i changed it on my zetec s and gave a little improvement to accelerastion and noise, but i dont have a cone filter  🙂

Is this 1.6 lump Duratec or Zetec? It says Duratec on the airbox? It looks exactly the same as the 1.6 lump in Fiestas. The air goes from under the bonnet to the box to then be sent back to the front to the intake manifold. I really wanted to make it nice and straight going from the scoop under the bonnet directly to between the manifold branches. Cone or no cone makes no difference to me as long as there are fewer bends and the air is cold. The extra sound is a bonus too.

I have just won a bucket seat and a K&N..

I may need to start a project thread.

Is it this one?

https://www.jsperformance.co.uk/silicone-hose-kits/car-silicone-hose-kits/ford-silicone-hose-kits/ford-fiesta-mk6-st-150-induction-hose-kit-hoses

If so, where does it connect to? To the old air box? Or does it go between the branches of the manifold?

not sure on your engine man, yours is different, im sure someone else will know how to change that hose or which one you need. maybe send an email to js and ask him if he does a hose for a fusion and where it goes.

This is the one:
mighty motor

I will drop them a line. Hopefully they will have something in stock.

It's a Zetec-SE (Yamaha)

You could bolt a Puma 1.7 engine in 😃

Seriously, if the brakes are crap, then just replace them, they are good enough for the size of the car.

Yellowstuff pads will be worse than what you have now as they take forever to warm up

Give it a good service and it'll be fine

I hope you are right. The car shows only 53k. I got it form its first owner who always serviced it at Ford certified garage. To say the brakes are crap is an understatement. It does not brake, it slows down. The brake feels good and progressive. All the components seem to be in good nick. I will start with discs, pads and hoses and I will re-assess the situation afterwards. This should give us some improvement hopefully.

I have just looked up the 1.7 lump.. it seems to be an interesting option but in full honestly I think I would rather Clio 182 if I was to spend more money. My Mrs is attached to this car so I cannot sell it right now hence why I am trying to make it into something a little bit more fun.

I've been running EBC Yellowstuff on my MK2 Focus for the last 5 years without any warm up issues.
