No power connecting to cigar lighter and it’s not the fuse or cigar lighter

Featured Replies

Hi, just bought a 2011 Fiesta Zetec and found there is no power to the cigar lighter. Thought it would be a straightforward job of replacing the fuse as there wasn’t even one in there for the cigar lighter and got a replacement cigar lighter in case it was that. I’ve just had someone look at it who confirmed it’s not the fusebox as all the fuses work. He says the immediate wires behind the cigar lighter are OK so somewhere there is a missing connection to the fusebox. We checked the fusebox underneath the bonnet in case and all fine there. It does appear to be a car that originally came with the cigar lighter/power socket but weird that it’s missing a wire behind where the fuse should go that connects to the cigar lighter. Is anyone familiar with this problem and is it an easy fix? TIA

There is confusion over the fuse for the cigar lighter socket on this model.

Try watching this video it may help.

@unofix  Now that IS confusing as fusebox doesn’t looks like the one in the video. According to handbook it should be a short 20A fuse not a square one. Will give this another go. Thanks

I haven't watched the video, but I thought the fuse should be a J Case fuse?

It seems that not all Mk7's have the same fusebox, and the cigar lighter fuse often comes up as a problem. Maybe it was dependent on the country of manufacture or maybe part way through the life of the Mk7 they changed the fusebox.

I think they changed the location in the latter part of 2017, I seem to remember something to do with accessibility.

@SkyCaptaindid you try the Jcase fuses? They are a more complicated fuse designed to delay startup. When the engine is started their is a voltage spike, the Jcase fuse 'sleeps' for about 2s before it allows itself to power up and is able to avoid the spike and protect the circuit.

@Jonro2009 Thanks for that info. I haven’t yet although I found a couple of older discussions with exact same problem. Apparently, Ford changed fuse locations from 60reg but didn’t update their manuals…I’m going to Halfords tomorrow to get a 20A square fuse. They only seem to have the J type you mentioned and now I’m not sure if I need a ‘low’ one (like a cube) or the taller one. Would either work? Complete novice here. Any ideas?

@unofix I found some updated fuse charts online and yes, it seems there are different fuse boxes for European-made (like mine) and US cars. Wish Ford had bothered to update the manuals at the time!

I'd suggest a low profile 20A Jcase fuse would be the correct size.

Fuse 33 should be a 20A for the front socket, but also check R9 in the same fuse box. That's the accessory delay relay, if it's not the fuse then it could be the relay.

@Jonro2009 That’s also great to know. Might be a trip to local Ford dealer to check if they have those to hand. Thanks again. Will update when this is fixed for anyone else who comes across this problem.

For anyone with a Fiesta with a cigar lighter/power socket that doesn't work, note that Ford changed fuse locations from 60reg but did not update their manuals!

Use this guide to check: https://fusecheck.com/ford/ford-fiesta-mk6-2008-2017-fuse-diagram

For my European-made 2011 Fiesta Zetec, I used the Type 2 (Europe) fuse chart. The cigar lighter/power fuse is now F30, blue 20AJCase low fuse, bottom row, 6th fuse from the left. NOT F22 as per the manual.

These fuses can be bought online e.g. Littelfuse for £1.34 incl VAT plus P&P, but I needed to fix this asap before a long motorway journey and bought one from a Ford Dealership Parts Dept. £7.37 incl. VAT for one fuse... Halfords only stock the taller JCASE fuses.

Thanks to this forum for helping me resolve this problem and relieved it wasn't anything else;)
