After WW2, the Allied Control Council determined many restrictions on the German economy, including the total ban on ship & aircraft manufacture, and of course, any type of munitions.

To allow the country to recover their economy, car manufacturing was permitted.

Many people to this day will not entertain a 'German' car because of their historical atrocities, of course, millions do buy them, and that is their decision alone.  Of course, according to you, the cars are all cr*p, so it's a moot point anyway...
