Gursx
Hi, I have a Focus St Line X with 43k miles with a full service history. For the last two months it’s been making some ticking noises from the engine bay. I thought it was the wheels (don’t know much about cars) but it’s definitely not as you can see from the youtube videos below. I’ve checked the oil level and it’s okay, was replaced 8 months ago. It’s under extended warranty from Cazoo and I’ll be taking it into the garage on Tuesday. I’d appreciate if any of you geniuses know what it may be so I can have some idea going in. Thanks for any help in advance! Youtube links Engine bay Driving
Alex.S
Not a genius here but have a 2020 ST Line X with 53k miles. I’ve not seen any posts about a ticking noise yet. Until now. Out of interest which engine is it? Mines the 1.5L 3 cylinder
Alex.S
@TomsFocus@unofix you guys are usually very knowledgeable. The YouTube link for ‘engine bay’ is pretty good. I’ve no idea as usual. *can’t remember other usernames
TomsFocus
That's a chain driven 1.0 EcoBoost. Sounds like an injector but it could easily just be something loose externally tapping on the engine as it shakes at idle. If you can hold anything loose while it's tapping that might help pinpoint the noise. Obviously don't put your hand near the belts or keep hold of any scorching hot parts. 2
unofix
The ticking sound is not that loud, and I'd agree with Tom's thoughts that it is probably just an injector. I've not listened to the Ecoboost 1.0 chain version but it does sound a little different to the 1.0 wet belt version. 🤔 1

I’m taking it to the garage on Tuesday lads thanks for the help. In regards to it being an injector, how difficult and expensive of a job is it? unofix
Before thinking about changing the injectors use FORScan and see how they are performing. @Tizer possible can advise on some readings. May well be other owners with the same issue. 1

Will do for sure, whatever it is I’m hoping it’s covered by warranty!
Karbonfaiba
Good job with the engine bay video. Is it the stopwatch-like ticking sound which is the problem? It's ticking at a consistent rate despite the revving so unlikely to do with the engine itself. It stops clicking later on, like the PCM gave up trying, maybe a faulty relay. 1

So I took it to the mechanic who listened to it and believes it’s a problem with the timing belt and suggested that I speak to Ford before doing any work on it as it’s on 48k miles so the belt shouldn’t be messing up. Does anyone have any experience in regards to this? How will Ford react? It’s not within Ford warranty anymore but the lifespan on a belt should be 150k miles…

Yours is the later version with a timing chain. Totally different engine.
Karbonfaiba
Hold up, did the mechanic not do a DTC read? You'll definitely be turned away at the dealership with these noise anomalies. Does this vehicle do many motorway miles at all? Engines do occasionally need a good 1 hour run at sustained revs to clean themselves out if they only do short journeys for months. Alternatively we need to pinpoint the source of the noise better.
