Ford Fiesta MK7 2012 Engine Juttering/Vibrating w Accelerati

Featured Replies

Hey everyone,

Been a while since I have been on the forum 🙂 Hope whoever is reading is well.

Currently having an issue while I am driving my fiesta (MK7 2012 model). I would say this is only frequently occurring whilst I am accelerating and moving up gears in mostly the 30-40mph range and then when I reach a good comfortable speed on the motorway for example (70mph in fifth gear) the engine is completely smooth and I feel no juttering or vibrations. When I start my car it doesn't sound like the engine is misfiring at all and sounds fine when I am stationery and increasing revs.

In January-February my car had been in repair from my head gasket blowing up resulting in a full new engine being put in, whilst this was done, a new clutch, timing belt and plugs etc  I believe was replaced in the same job. I had a coolant leak too and this was sorted. Everything that I have checked today like oil levels seem fine, coolant levels too also good it has not decreased since that leak was fixed.

I don't think it could be an engine problem considering I have had it replaced fairly recently but I really don't know and it just seems from everything I have read online already that it can be a problem with 50+ solutions and you need to try everything and see if one fixes it and makes my car smoother again.

I have checked for any codes and there is none and no warning light is appearing.

I have my MOT coming up and I do believe it will still pass but I would just like my car to drive smooth again as these vibrations/juttering proper play on my mind whilst I drive.

Any suggestions or help would be really appreciated. Where should I start on trying to resolve this issue?

Thanks again fiesta club 🙂

what engine is it! petrol/diesil? what size/model is the engine could be a million things but if you give a few more details of what it is then maybe someone on here will know of some common issues related to the engine you have and the issues your facing.

if its a TDI engine first thing i would check is injector seals and wiring and if you have the means to the injector itself.  but as i said it could be a silly number of things and without info on what engine it is there's not really much anyone can do to try help.

as for codes, what reader/software are you using to try get codes and it could also be the case that something is failing and not yet failed so there wont be a code yet.

good luck getting it all sorted sometimes the little things can be more annoying than a massive issue especially if you cant find what it is.

Sorry for not featuring these details

Engine size - 1.2
Year - 2012
Model - MK7 Ford Fiesta Edge
Fuel Type - Petrol (Usually fill up with Premium when I can 99 RON) if that matters

could be maf sensor..dirty maf..air filter needs changed, needs a new injector or try injector cleaner https://www.eurocarparts.com/p/stp-petrol-fuel-injector-cleaner-200ml-549771791 next time you fill up a full tank just pour it in or maybe they didnt give you new plugs?

Will give the injector cleaner a go first, thank you for the link.

Yeah about the plugs it certainly is a possibility? You really never know what happens and you can easily be fed rubbish. Something to consider if Injector cleaner+maybe an air filter clean/change doesn't work.

Thanks for all the suggestions mate

For anyone else reading as suggested above to include more details

I used an Ancel AD410 (https://www.anceltech.com/product/detail?id=1083195059194556416) for code reading, plugged direct into the car.

If it's worth getting a better reader/software to use let me know please

The problem with Generic code readers is they very often don't read all of the Ford specific DTC's. There are two Canbus systems in your vehicle, a High Speed, and a Medium Speed. Ford also use many DTC's which are unique to them. I'd recommend that you download FORScan (free for use on Windows laptops) and connect with a 'vLinker FS' lead

FORScan: https://forscan.org/download.html

vLinker FS cable: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Vgate-vLinker-Adapter-FORScan-MS-CAN/dp/B0952P4MLP

Not owning a windows laptop is devastating...

I see they have a phone app option which requires a bluetooth solution, they link one on the FORScan site which seems a silly price, would an alternative on Amazon (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Veepeak-Bluetooth-Diagnostic-Supports-Vehicles/dp/B076XVQMVS/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?crid=2I0B96927HF9E&keywords=for-scan+bluetooth&qid=1690139379&sprefix=for-scan+bluetooth%2Caps%2C77&sr=8-1-spons&sp_csd=d2lkZ2V0TmFtZT1zcF9hdGY&psc=1) work at all?

Simple answer No !!

You need either the 'vLinker FD' for an android phone OR the 'vLinker FD+' for an iPhone. The use of other adapters will put you back in to the situation of it possibly not reading both the HS and MS Canbus, and/or not reading all of the Ford specific DTC's.

Android version (£34.99): https://www.amazon.co.uk/Vgate-Bluetooth-vLinker-Scanner-Diagnostic/dp/B08H82WC8L

iPhone version (£44.39): https://www.amazon.co.uk/Vgate-Bluetooth-vLinker-Scanner-Diagnostic/dp/B08H8JHWP2

I am glad I asked you! Thanks once again for the help.

Why on earth would you need the timing belt done on a new engine?

I think I would be finding out exactly what WAS done.

Think it was just the case of doing jobs/changing parts whilst it was deemed off road to save potentially having more issues in near future. Ironic I know if I am having an issue now but yeah it was just an additional offering like the clutch which didn't really need doing but whilst it was under the light I just thought why not when he asked me if I wanted this changing.

Should I be concerned by that?

Sure it was a NEW engine?  Not a used engine?  That would then make changing the timing belt a worthwhile option.

I also can't see how 12 year old Mk7 in a very low spec would be worth the cost of a brand new engine.

Cutch, absolutely.

It was a previously used engine yes, (sorry if it seemed I suggested that it was a brand new one fitted) it was around the same milage as the old engine, that was put in (around 70-80k). Realistically it probably wasn't worth it to get this work done (I agree) but due to personal circumstances I had to get back on the road ASAP for work and this was the best way in my mind at the time than finding a brand new car to buy, which I probably will start soon to look at but just making sure this survives a little longer whilst I find the perfect replacement for it 🙂 Also this car will likely be passed down in the family or to sell when I'm done with it so having a pending fault like this which could lead to something bigger as YBTURBO suggested isn't ideal.

Probably needs a full, major service, including plugs, leads and filters.

The coil pack could be going down too, it's old enough.

Check the main engine/gearbox earth strap is tight

Yeah apologises after reading back my post it does seem like I said new engine was fitted, this meaning a different one was put in to my previous. Sorry for not making it clear. I can't seem to edit my original post to make new readers think different. Hope they read the comments/contributions 🙂

I would probably agree with this but surely after all that work that was done at the start of the year it wouldn't need a full major service surely? But you actually never know what is done to your car, I would hope to think my Mechanic wouldn't reuse the same spark plugs for example but how would I know if it didn't witness the work?

I picked up the injector cleaner from Halfords just then, so will try that when I next fill up my tank then move down the suggestions as they go along so really appreciate the suggestions from you Dave! I will keep everyone updated on what I do and what exactly fixes the problem. As I said it seems to be a problem that has 50 potential solutions and it's like finding a needle in a haystack.

If they're not on the invoice, along with the other stuff, they weren't done.

Try better fuel too, I find Esso to be the best E10

Will give better fuel a go too, I mostly fill up at Costco with Premium Unleaded at the moment, idk how good that is compared to others. Haven't studied petrol much 😂

As it's a used engine, that would come with used spark plugs fitted.  As Dave says, if you weren't charged separately for plugs on the invoice, then we have to assume that they weren't replaced.  Do you have the invoice to hand so we can see exactly what's been charged for?

I will try dig it out for you today, it will be somewhere (hopefully). Thanks for helping 🙂

Super unleaded may be a bit too rich for that set up BTW, just use regular unleaded
