Ford focus 2007 key fob not working

Featured Replies

Hi. I have recently replaced the battery on my 2007 Ford focus (UK right hand drive).

I have reprogrammed the key. Key in. Back and forth four times. Chime. Press button on my fob. Another chime. Let back to position two or left for 10 seconds.

issue I have is that it recognises my key fob when being programmed, but none of the buttons will work regardless of what I do.

anyone have any ideas?

You said you don't have a multimeter, BUY ONE!! If all you ever use it for is to test the voltage of a battery, it'll be worth it as around £7, every man should have it in his, 'bits drawer'! You need

As @unofix has stated the procedure should work. Here it is in full... I am assuming you have changed the 'car' battery and not the 'fob' battery...

Thanks for the response. I am not removing my key. I am simply pressing the button, letting it chime and then leaving it in the barrel for at least 10 seconds.

Why would you need to reprogramme the key after a simple battery change?

I replaced my own car battery 2 months ago, and my key worked perfectly after the change.

Hi Stephen. The key battery died and when I replaced it then locking function wouldn’t work. Hence needing to reprogram the key. It chikes to let me know it picks the key up, but just cannot get it to lock or unlock the car

Hi Stephen. The key battery died ...

Just re read this. First thing you need to do is measure the voltage of your 'new' battery, it should be 3.3v. No point fettling with it till you know it's 100%. Once you've established the battery is good, make sure it is in the right way up, and also, that the bottom contact is bent upwards to ensure it is touching the battery. The symptoms you have suggest it does NOT need reprogrammed, but the the fob is getting no power...

Hi Stephen. Do really appreciate the effort you are putting in here. The car is picking up when I am pressing the lock key when in programming mode, so I know that the battery is fine and that the car is picking up that this key exists. I just can’t seem to get it to do anything after I come out of programming mode.

Replacing the fob battery should not necessitate the reprogramming of the key. If you have the spare key, try that and see if it's working with the car. If you don't have a spare key,, and you are positive the battery has been put in correctly and is working, the only other option I have is taking it to a decent local independent locksmith to sort (NOT Timpsons!)

So the spare key that I have is simply the key with no fob. The keys themself work fine to operate the car. I simply cannot use the fob to lock or unlock the car anymore. This is the issue I am having. The reprogram seems to work fine, but I just cannot get it to then complete the lock and unlock functions

You are correct, I forgot, I have a spare key that is also a 'fob'! I have no further suggestions. The key does not need reprogrammed after a battery change. For a 'new' key, the above procedure is normally robust & works (I have experience in doing it). You have exhausted my knowledge now, and like I said, you may need to take it to a 'man' to sort...

I appreciate the help. I will see if any other users on here have any thoughts. The key simply died and then needed a new battery which has led to this position. I’m sure it shouldn’t be this complicated.

At this point I'd just use FORScan, and delete all keys and reprogramme in the keys you have. It could well be after so many attempts the car has reached it's limit on adding keys.

I’ll be honest that all looks way too complicated for me. If it isn’t something I can fix simply I think I’ll just stick to the old fashioned manual key concept. Appreciate the help though

Another re read has led me to believe your logic may me flawed. You assume the battery is working fine because the key makes the car 'chime' when in programming mode. The key fob has a built in passive transponder inside it which is the device that will deactivate your immobiliers, and allow you to enter programming mode. The transponder (which does not rely on battery power) just has to be in the proximity of the ignition barrel to work.

I am still of the opinion that when you 'replaced' the battery, one of the contacts got bent, and it's not making a proper seat in the battery well...

Hi Stephen. Happy to follow this logic. So I have attached a picture of my key internals. What would you suggest I do?

Just for comparison, took a pic of my own. The frequent culprit is the contact circled in red. You need to make sure it is bent upwards so it makes contact with the bottom side of the battery, over time it gets compressed and on a battery change, will often just be out of reach. Be very gentle as it is fragile, and you don't want to snap it off (though not terminal as you can bodge it with a bent paperclip LOL)

I have fingers crossed that fetling a bit will solve your issue...

My big concern is the use of a Duracell battery (made in China) which are known to be the cause of many keyfob problems. Before you give up, go and buy a new CR2032 either Energizer or Panasonic from a reputable shop (maybe not Poundland 🤣).

Now, are you making comment on the battery I have fitted?? 😂

I have just rubbed it off. It was almost like some think layer of glue which all of the batteries (purchased a pack of 4) seem to have around the edge. No evidence of it being a protective film to remove. Will try and see if that’s the issue I’m having.

This is how the key fob looks with and without the battery in.

Now, unless it's an optical illusion, those bottom contacts look as if they are bent downwards, where they should be bent up to contact the battery...

I’m putting the key in. Back and forth four times. Chimes. Press button on fob. Chimes again. But then no matter what I do next it simply won’t recognise me pressing. Any keys on the fob
