About 140,000 miles and just over 10 years old, so about maximum original recommended change interval on time or mileage basis. So at least one has managed to get to that point!

Do you reckon he'll get any takers, Ron? Was he proposing to do the belt of adjust the asking price accordingly?

He (I think has priced it accordingly) $6,000( about £3,100)whether he will get any takers I don’t know.I will keep an eye on it though. It’s on ‘Carsales’( Australia, which is a national site) have a look at it.

bit late to the party here, but is it just specifically the 1.0L lumps that have been affected? the wife likes the look of a 2019 focus ST Line x with the 1.5 182ps engine. Is there any known problems with that model?

thanks all

The 1.0 ecoboost "saga" applies to the earlier version of the engine with the "wet" cambelt. This has never been used in the current Mk 4 Focus (2018-on) anyway, that has the revjsed version with a chain cam drive.

The Mk 4 1.5 is a similar 3 cylinder design, ie chain not wet belt. Both the revised 1.0 and the 1.5 still have a  small "wet" belt driving the oil pump which needs replacing at 10 years/150,000 miles which is not a cheap job (approx 5.5 hours labour) on the 1.5.

Some discussion of this topic on this thread (and many, many more!):

https://www.fordownersclub.com/forums/topic/151678-pre-emptive-oil-pump-belt-change-on-10l-ecoboost-2020-mhev/

The 1.5 Ecoblue doesn't even have a wet belt for the oil pump, but uses a direct drive from the crankshaft.

The 1.5 diesel does not have a wetbelt for the oil pump.  The pump on those is driven directly from the crankshaft, no belt or chain needed.

Both engines use a turbo.

The dry belt interval on the 1.5 EcoBlue is the same 10 years as the oil pump wetbelt interval on the 1.0/1.5 EcoBoost.  The oil pump belt change requires removal of the chain, so will be over £1000.  Dry belt on the diesel is nearer £500.

Riffs car is a 1.5 EcoBoost.  (182ps). Rogers advice is correct.

Lol, didn't Ecoblue (diesel) and Ecoboost (petrol) 1.5s get mixed up on another thread?

I suspect though that Unofix was maybe suggesting the diesel might be the most reliable option? But then again, haven't we seen issues on that with the small chain linking the cams?😀

Thanks all. So it looks like the 1.5 is a steadier, more reliable engine than the tinpot 1.0L. The car itself has 45k on it but she won’t be doing mega miles, no more than 10k a year. We’ve got a 08 smax we’ve had for 12 years and put 70k on it so high mileage shouldn’t be a problem. She really likes this new shape 19 plate focus but was hesitant after watvhdog on the tv. Fingers crossed if we go ahead and make the purchase it proves to be a good and reliable as all my previous fords!! Thanks for your input everyone

I know, I was just mentioning that the 1.5 Ecoblue doesn't even have a wet belt for the oil pump. I never contradicted Roger's advice, and yes he is correct about the 1.5 Ecoboost.

Just a bit of a misunderstanding 👍

So are the 1.5 and 2.0 ecoblue engines invincible?

The 1.5 petrol oil pump issue seems not nearly as widespread as the 1L issue. Looks like Ford USA are going to recall/fix the oil pump issue in the 2nd quarter of this year.
Sorry if that’s already been discussed, you can’t expect me to read a whole thread !!

The 2.0 Ecoblue is a totally different engine to that of the 1.5 Ecoblue. The 2.0 uses a wet timing belt and a wet oil pump belt, I know, I own one 🙁

Of all the engines I'd say the 1.5 Ecoblue is probably the most 'invincible' if in fact any modern engine could ever be called that these days.

The 2.0 ecoblue is far from invincible esp in the transit.

Ford don't make an invincible engine now...  They even had to remove 'Dura' from the engine branding due to the trade descriptions act! 🤭

judging by your on screen info, it looks like you have the same model as i'm enquiring about. can i ask if you're happy with it, or would you look for something else?

I love that car. But I don’t own it , it’s a Motability car. With all the eco boom stuff if I owned it I’d maybe sell at this point.  But as far as I can tell the oil pump failing happens but not all that frequently.

I’m at 64k miles 69 plate,  I believe it’s got a timing chain. It’s powerful, handles very well, does 33mpg but much better on motorway. Only big issue was a new gearbox at 58k it’s a torque converter and it’s not massively expensive to replace. In almost 5 years it’s only once not started instantly on pressing the button, second press no problem. It’s stalled twice in 5 years, never found out the cause but started straight away after. It’s proving hard to replace as it ticks almost every box, potentially unreliable is the only bad thing I can say about it. Drives like new, had a screen wash hose replaced.
Hope that helps

I’m not usually into conspiracy theories but this seems like Ford are trying to write off what’s left of their range of ICE cars.

What did you decide?

13 hours ago, Alex.S said:

What did you decide? I asked some one who works for Ford if that could find out for me, and they have confirmed the engine is chain driven, with wet belt for the pump. Think I’m going to make the purchase. Thank everyone who had some input. Much appreciated

I have the 2017 Ford edge with the 2.0 liter Ecoboost motor I bought it used from the Taylor Ford dealership in Taylor Michigan I made six payments on it and the check engine light came on so I called fords for service I was sent to voicemail Mail three times with no response from Ford's I had my mechanic look at it and was told cylinder two was. Getting coolant in it mind you I'm on medical disabled fixed income when I bought the car the salesman tired to tell me a extended warranty for 3500 dollars which on top of the 14000 I paid for the car I could not afford so I passed on it now I was told by Ford's customer care to bad you're on your own we will not fix it even though they knew about the bad motor they put in these cars then the dealer said the same so needless to say I'm so ***** off that only six payments into this car now I have to replace the motor the car has 107 k on it my f150 had 252 k before anything major went wrong so I don't know if I should seek out an attorney don't know what to do any suggestions

First suggestion would be to use an American Ford Owners Club. This is the UK club and we don't have the same engines, or the same consumer laws as you do.

If you feel that you have bought a 'Lemon' then perhaps contact Steve Lehto ?

Hi David,

Yes, I could only echo Unofix's comments on this. We do have US members on here and it's great to exchange comments about cars, driving and things in general, but I think you do need US based advice for this sort of issue. I believe the situation is even different from state to state unless a Federal matter is involved.

From your experience, though, it does sound as if Ford "customer care" is the same both sides of the pond!

Over here, we have something called Citizens Advice Bureau which can sometimes give free advice on these sort of issues, also Local Government here has Trading Standards departments that look into instances of "rogue traders" - misselling and so on. Don't know if your City Authorities do that sort of thing?

There does seem to be a fair amount of online advice over there (eg: https://lemonlawcar.com/blog/dealership-sold-me-bad-car/#:~:text=What If a Dealer Sells You a Damaged,5 5. Contact an Auto Fraud Attorney etc) though most of them seem to be steering you towards an attorney.
