Classic MK2 escort barn find.

Featured Replies

Hello,

Recently we have inherited my dad's vintage escort which was actually bought by his mother brand new. It is now in 'barn find' condition and has a lot of parts which he bought ready to refurbish it himself. I have no idea where to sell something like this or to get advice on pricing something like this.

Any suggestions are very welcome.

Many thanks,

Lucy

Depends what it is.

If it's a 1.1 Base model or, more importantly, a "more-door" it will not be as valuable as, say, a 2-door 1600 Sport

Some ideas and a photo would be nice👍

Ok. I'll get more details. It's a five door which I know aren't as desirable. Many thanks.

5 door mk 2 ?, did they make one ?

Something is very wrong here. 🤔

You say it is a 1970 Mk2 Escort 5 door ?????

They didn't make the Mk2 Escort until 1975 "N reg"

It was only available as either a '2 Door' or a '4 Door' saloon or as an Estate

I think you need to post a few photos so we can see what it is. 👍

Most likely is a 4 door.  Non-car people don't necessarily know when a boot hatch counts as a door or not.  And more to the point, they probably don't care either!

I'm guessing these details are going to be very comprehensive  when you post them 🤔

Mathewsons of "Bangers and Cash" fame often sell barn finds and I've seen a few Mk 2 Escorts on there. They do collect the car and bits and pieces to take to auction.

Hello I have photos and now have the log book.

Ford escort, 1975 .1600 Ghia.

The engine was removed as the gasket had gone on it. He has alot of the part's ready to refurbish himself but sadly he was diagnosed with Parkinson's so could not complete himself. It was my dad's mother's car which she bought brand new. I have the original wheels and a spare set, front panels, grill, side panels, windsreens, bonnet fuel tank, lights. The list goes on.

I just wondered if anyone had any guidance as to a valuation and if anyone would be interested.

Many thanks,

Lucy

How badly corroded is it underneath?

I reckon, unless it's totally rotten underneath, £3-5000 in that condition, more towards the £3k as the engine is out and the seats are missing

This is under the bonnet, I haven't been right underneath to take a photo but I can do. I wouldn't say it's rotten as it's been inside on ramps for quite some time.

Would you think selling it as a job lot with all parts would be more worth while?

Do you think eBay or bangers and cash would be worth an email?

If you're on Facebook, try a post on East Coast Retro's.  You may find someone local interested without further hassle.

I would definitely recommend contacting Matthewsons to ask for a rough auction estimate as well.

Anglia Car Auctions in Kings Lynn have have a regular classic sale, though I'm not sure if they take cars in parts like this.

Valuations for this sort of thing are not my strong point.  But it looks they're worth around £10k-£15k when finished.  There is an awful lot of work to be done on this one though.  The rust on the front end suggests that there probably will be quite a bit underneath.  And that engine block will now need to be fully stripped and rebuilt as it's sat open rusting for so long.

I wouldn't recommend selling a decent car like that on Ebay, it's full of chancers and scammers

Advertise it, complete, sell it on Classic Fords for sale on Facebook or Car and classic, put it up for £7,500, if you get no joy, drop the price by £500 until you get interest

Put loads and loads of photos on the ad and be honest.

It's a 1600 Ghia, you will sell it easy peasy

I changed my advice on the price (before someone jumps on it) because of all the spare parts you have with it

Thanks so much for your help, I will try all those avenues. I can't believe what you think it's worth even in that state, we would have been happy for £500.

My dad passed away last year and I sat and watched every episode of Bangers and cash with him. I want to see it go to someone who would do something with it.

Thanks again for your help much appreciated 👍

Congratulations for using your intelligence and coming on here to ask people's advice.

Chancers will come and say it's worth £500

The engine alone is worth about £1500

DO NOT let that car go for below £3,000 but you will get more

I knew I needed to do some research before I did anything with it but thanks that has really helped. Like with alot of things you always get people who try it on.

That's great 👍

I'd be tempted to have it restored to be honest, you've got most of the parts.

Be worth loads then

What would you be looking at for a full restoration do think?

Would it be worth paying someone to do it for what you would finally sell it for?

Judging by Mathewson’s ‘Restoring Classics’ the cost of restoring rarely leaves any profit as buyers usually underestimate the costs involved.

Honestly, I don't think you'd get much change from £10,000 if you just leave it at a classic specialist to restore.

Only really worth doing by a skilled hobbiest in my opinion.

There's no harm in asking a couple of local classic specialists for a rough ballpark quote.
