Washers not working

Featured Replies

Since yesterday, whilst I can hear the "whirring" and the bottle is full, the jets are not shooting out the screenwash from either the front or back.  It was working OK yesterday morning, then when tried again, nothing come out.   I refilled thinking it was empty, and whilst it looked that way, it's not worked since.   There was not "trickle" when last used to make me think it was low so thinking there may be a blockage? Car is only just 2 years old so like to think it's not wear and tear.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated

Common as muck on these, for some reason.

I've just had to do my daughters.

The pump filter is blocked

Push a hosepipe into the bottle as far as you can and flush the bottle out for a minute or so

Syphon about a litre out and add a full pack of steradent tablets and leave overnight

Pump the steradent out through the nozzles, including the rear

Flush again and add screen wash

Use  steradent, not milton tablets as it works better

Make sure you use good quality screen wash and not fairy liquid etc and try and keep the system used often to keep the solution flowing

Good advice for many systems on your car, for example don't keep A/C for that one day in the year it may be a bit warm LOL

Cheers, I always use a good screenwash instead of water and know it wasn't a fuse as I can hear the pump trying.  Will take it to a garage otherwise I'll make a balls of it 😂

Thanks chaps

Mixing screenwash of different makes can often result in a jelly-like sludge building up in the pump filter. Do as Dave @DaveT70 has said and it could well dissolve the blockage. If that fails you will have to remove the screen wash pump and clean out the filter. Always try to use the same make of screenwash. If changing to a different one, then run the tank empty before filling with the new one.

I reckon if the OP can't pop a Steradent into the washer bottle, you've just scared the bejesus out of him LOL

It works really well

Do you have to buy Steradent especially for this or do more people need it than I thought?

I tried washing up liquid once...huge mistake, foam everywhere!

Dishwasher tablets can do a similar job and are good for cleaning cooling systems after blown headgaskets.  They're designed to degrease and breakdown dirt using enzymes without foaming up everywhere.  Though personally I don't know anyone with a dishwasher either.

The steradents foamed like mad too

One of our drivers thought it would be a good idea to fill the washer bottle on his wagon with TFR.... 🙄  He also used an "empty" Adblue bottle to put water in the washer bottle because he couldn't find the watering can that was hiding in plain sight.  That went well also... 🙄

Had this 2 years into my 2017 Mk8 back in 2019 so took to dealer hoping it'd be covered under warranty. It wasn't. £60 to do a full clean out of the whole system and refill. All done while I waited so not too bad especially as they didn't charge me for a separate non covered air vent job a few weeks earlier.

@TomsFocus You think that's funny?  That's nothing compared to a former "driver" we had working for us.  I use the term driver very loosely!

He decided that he wanted to become an HGV driver instructor, so away he went to a local company, same one that I used when I did my HGV test and next door to where we have our maintenance agreement for our O license.  Needless to say I quickly got told about his erm, exploits, shall we say.

Might have been an Iveco, not 100% sure but, the header tank and washer bottle were next to each other.  The genius was overheard telling 2 learners that they were connected, so it didn't matter where they put the screenwash.  Unsurprisingly, it didn't go very well when he topped up the header tank with screenwash...   His P45 arrived not too long later, as that was the straw that broke the camels back due to numerous other indiscretions.

Full pack of Steradent ? Maybe while doing it you could put your teeth in there too ?

Good idea though, Steradent is good for cleaning many things including toilet bowls.

Yeah I chucked the whole lot in, they were only 75p anyway, it frothed like mad, but obviously did the trick

Recently had this same issue on my Mk8 ST-3. I solved it by doing exactly what @DaveT70 suggested, and posted here in case anyone wants to follow it:

I opted for the siphoning technique because despite managing to get to the washer pump, I really struggled to get enough grip to pull it out of the bottle.
