Engine Code Location

Featured Replies

Quite probably a stupid question.

Where would I find the engine code for my car, can I decipher it from the VIN plate?  It's coming up due a cambelt, and I'd prefer to get the parts myself.

I'm sure @unofix will be along to tell me that I can find it using Forscan. 😉

Cheers in advance. 🙂

Send me the registration number or VIN and I'll see if I can check the build sheet for you.

The engine type would have been on a paper label stuck to the engine when new, but mostly they fall off or become unreadable. @TomsFocus would be able to tell you where to look for the paper label.

Engine codes aren't included in the VIN on modern Fords.

For the label, it depends which engine it is but most were stuck to the top end of the cambelt cover.

It's also in the V5 logbook.

And if you have a 'newer' model, it's often at the bottom of the door jamb sticker as well.  This one is M0JB for example.

It matches the end of my VIN on my 2023 Fiesta ST...

That's not the engine code needed for parts.  It's a 4 digit code including letters as shown on the sticker above.

Ah right - engine code, not engine number 👍

Yes, fair point.  Edited the earlier post to avoid confusion.

I don't think getting the parts yourself is the best idea.

If the garage doing the job supply the parts, then they are responsible for the whole job.

However, if you supply the parts, and something goes wrong, who is to blame?

Where you got the parts from will blame how it was fitted, and the garage will blame your parts, and you're left with the problem.

Totally understand and agree, Alan.  It's just the way I've usually done things,

Some places will use an apparent lesser quality part to what I'd prefer, if that makes sense.

Cheers, mate.  PM inbound.

There is a sticker on the cambelt cover, but, it's illegible.

Sorry the build sheet is not showing the engine type.

No worries, thanks mate. 👍

Most probable engine will be T3DB, if you can make any of that out on the paper label

I think that's 1.6 TDCI.  More likely to be HXJA or HXJB for 1.6 Ti-VCT.
