Insurance cost for older drivers

Featured Replies

Hi

Are there any 76 year old members in the forum and what premiums are they paying (MK 4 125hp  automatic focus). I have just received my renewal and it has gone up to nearly £1200-00. I have been with them for Sixteen years and a full no claims bonus. I had a no fault claim five years ago which did not effect my policy. Last year some one went into the back of me in a supermarket car park, no damage was caused to either vehicle and no claims were made , but as one should I informed my insurance company just in case., straight away they increased my premium by £270-00 this year they have increased by a further £350-00.Is this normal and is anybody else paying these amounts.

Many Thanks

Oh dear, I guess you're on that upward curve discussed here...

I can't understand why you'd inform the insurance if no damage was caused to either vehicle.

That's probably gone down as 50/50 responsibility to increase future premiums.

I'm 74 (75 next month) and paid £382 in June, with LV insurance. This was despite my old car being written off in June 2022 in a non fault accident with a Hungarian lorry that took nearly two years to sort out.

I remember the quotes started from around £300, but the lower quotes were from companies I hadn't heard of, so I paid a bit more to go with a company who have a good reputation.

Remember, the best time to look for quotes is about 22 days before your current policy expires, as quotes go up the nearer to expiry you leave it.

Good luck.

Hi.

If you need any help with insurance at all then please feel free to drop me a line.

Regards,

Dan.

You wait till you want a hire car. When I was 73, last year, I found that even with damage waiver I'd have to pay the 1st £2k. Some hire companies wouldn't even cater for someone my age.

If it's any consolation, I thought you were about 20 years younger based on forum posts. (Never even considered the 49 could be birth year!)

My wife's insurance is due shortly, so, as usual, been doing a few quotes for comparison when the actual renewal arrives. 10 year old SEAT Mii, 1.0, 60ps, full NCD, clean licence 40 years+. (I won't tell exactly how old Mrs B is, but let's just say, like me, she's been robbed of winter fuel allowance this year!)

Anyway, quotes (all fully comp) so far vary from £135 to £875, so not a lot of help really! Might just as well make up a figure myself!😀

Be  interested to hear the thoughts from Dan@Adrian Flux on the matter of car insurance for the over 75s and the attitude of insurance companies.

'Over 75s' meaning 75s are safe but 76s+ aren't....? I really need to know.. 🤔

In the same way that 18 year olds can legally get drunk, whilst a 17 year old can't. There'll always be a border age when one is offered as a condition...

Seems expensive have you tried or maybe a family member use the comparison websites to check for better deals. Customer Loyalty seems to count very little these days. Make sure you are getting everything you require for your insurance needs check carefully the policy meets all your needs, good luck.

This afternoon, I have been helping my friend try to get insurance for a car he has just bought (delivered on a trailer on Saturday).

It is a 67 plate diesel B-Max, so nothing sporty. I went on several comparison sites, and most were coming up with quotes of around £1400 (he is 83), which seemed ridiculous considering that he payed around £330 for his old Astra van earlier this year. He did have an accident back last January, but it didn't affect his no claims.

We eventually got a quote for about £740 from Admiral, and, by adding his house insurance on a multiple quote got the car insurance down to around £680 (his house insurance is due later this month, and will be £100 cheaper than last years premium).

To add insult to injury, I've just been on the phone to my 53 year old son (lorry driver), who said he has just renewed his car insurance on a 15 plate diesel Peugeot 2008 for about £230 (his partner and me as named drivers on his policy).

I did try ringing Adrian Flux, but they came in around £1400.

Not surprised, tried them for both house and car insurance, they were off the scale compared to others...

On our policy you MUST report ANY incident within 24 hours and I expect the reporting will apply to all policies as it is witholding relevant information?

Definitely comparison sites as per:

https://www.moneysavingexpert.com/insurance/car-insurance/

My main comment (after bitter experience) is to make certain that, when you go through to the insurers site you check any and all details as they sometimes aren't asked or don't come across correctly (even something innocuous like a tow bar!)

AND be aware of the excesses which they often increase to keep the premium lower.
For reference we are 71 and paying £249 for 2011 S-MAX 163 auto but it varies a lot depending on postcode etc etc etc.

I went from a 52 plate mk3 mondeo £280 fully comp to a 2007 mk4 mondeo 2ltr petrol and churchill put my premiums up to £800 which i refused to pay so i looked around and found 1st central insurance who gave me same cover as churchill for £400 fully comp it does not pay to be loyal to insurance companies I am 67 years old and have never had a claim in 34 years.

Agree, and, on my other forum there is a discussion going on about "modifications" including tow bar and even dashcam which some insurers appear to classify thus.

Comparison websites may not have your mod so it will be missed unless there is an option to report on the chosen insurers site when you click through.

Always best to reveal everything and check as a) They appear to look for any excuse to avoid paying out? and b) they are in no way your mates!

Hi.

Sorry we were unable to offer you a competitive insurance quotation but thanks for giving us a try,

Dan.

So, when the actual renewal arrived, we were surprised but pleased to find it had gone down by about 21%, way better than we could get elsewhere.

Just got back from a few days away, and found my renewal waiting for me. 30% lower! And last years was very competitive at the time.

In both cases, same car, same cover, same drivers (full NCD, no convictions).

Now, I've seen recently that premiums are starting to drop, but not by this much. So puzzling, but I'm not complaining. Perhaps they've stopped regarding us as younger drivers and therefore less of a risk now?😀

Just renewed mine. My current provider wanted a 10% increase on last years premium but I managed to get it 30% cheaper than the renewal from a sister company via a comparison site.

Strangely enough when I tried a few Insurers direct rather than going through comparison sites they were much more expensive, including the one I have gone with.

I will be 67 in April, my insurance was £164 fully comp last year. I renewed it in December with the same insurer Aviva, for £180. For the sake of a few quid it wasn't worth the hastle changing. I always check on the run up to renewal and never auto renew. Focus Tit X 2016

64 and my renewals for the 22nd feb are around £300.00, i paid £330.00 is last year from memory.

geoffrey came in at £285.00 but that has no glass cover for some reason

Like StephenFord just got my renewal quote. One year older (83) and gone down £50.
