Is this rare Focus Mk3 good price to buy?

Featured Replies

The last Ghia badged car to be deleted was the Galaxy

The first Titanium was the Mk2 Focus

The first Ghia was the MK1 Granada, replacing "E" badged cars

Both Focuses were top spec but Titanium had sports (🤪) edge at first and Ghia luxury

Like with Vignale, Ford forgot was Ghia was for and diluted it and ruined it.

And the last Fiesta Titanium lost Climate control, Fog Lamps and even alloy wheels!!!!!!

Capri, Cortina and Granada Ghia had completely unique Lights, wheels, exterior trim or Grilles and interiors

I always preferred Ghias

  • Agreed, only option there is the sunroof.  And with Mk3s already being full of rain leaks, I wouldn't want one with a sunroof myself!

  • Fair enough.  I do still think it's a generational thing though.  Personally I couldn't tell what some of the 'premium' features are on brand new cars today, or those from pre-1980, but Mk2 & Mk3

Not sure I agree with that.  The 'Sport' and 'Zetec' models had the sports edge at the time.  Titanium was still a lux model with comfort suspension.

Both of them got auto wipers, auto lights and auto dimming mirror.

Ghia got velour seats, wood effect dash and a basic 6000CD stereo.  But did get cruise control.

Titanium got half leather seats, carbon effect dash and the gloss Sony stereo.  But no cruise control (baffling!).

Both had similar 5 spoke 16" wheels but the Ghia version had split spokes and were arguably less aesthetically pleasing.

So a sporty edge then🤪

Sports suspension was an option IIRC

Yes, they forgot what Zetec was too👍

Well have to agree to disagree on this one.  To me, sports spec is bigger wheels, uncomfortable suspension and massive seat bolsters.  Not luxury half leathers and a snazzy stereo!

Sports suspension wasn't optional on Titanium or any other models at this point.  They did offer a retrofit Eibach upgrade for any model except ST.

Can't see them on the TitX 'standard list' so if it has got them, yes, they would be 'extras'.

Not sure other two but I know nav was optional

Was that Mk3?

I've still got an early Mk 3 brochure dated December 2010.

The factory options available then on Tit X were 18" 5 spoke alloys, full size spare ( "mini" was standard), tow bar and electrics, sunroof, 5" radio display with nav, appearance pack (key free and rear privacy glass), driver assistance pack (including BLIS, TSR, lane-keeping, etc).

150ps at launch, 182ps came later (2012?).

Mk2.5.

Could either have the Titanium X pack - full leathers, powerfold mirrors, xenon headlights & privacy glass.  (The one I had.)

Or the Titanium Sport pack - 18" alloys and sports suspension.

I have absolutely no idea why anyone would ruin a Titanium with the sport pack instead of buying an ST!

I was wondering when the 182 came in, I reckon you're right with 2012.

They did make specific 'Navigator' trims, so I assume they would have been cheaper than adding Nav to a standard model as an option.

Easy to tell which Mk3s have the driver assist pack from outside, they have a huge square block at the top of the windscreen.  Whereas the standard auto light/wiper models just have a thin streak down to the sensor.

We used to get all sorts of demo cars at work and I recall doing a long business trip in a Senator. I thought it was a very nice car for its time.

An old friend of mine purchased an ex Senator traffic cop car in the mid 90's, I thought he was mad for getting it seeing as it had about a dozen taped over holes in the roof and screw holes & left in steel mounts on the dash, only the 'POLICE' graphics and lights was taken off the body, it still had the bright orange and blue stripping down the sides, he'd got it to have fun with, the whole car had been made bullet proof....Upgraded brakes - Upgraded stiffened lowered suspension - Engine was a monster, 3 litre I think, but it had some 300,000 odd miles on the clock, the car was won in an auction and got it dirt cheap, when he opened the boot he was shocked to see that everything that had been taken off it had all been left in the boot by mistake, he did think of putting it all back on but a chap said you'll get pulled straight away, so he nipped to his local police station and handed it all over, bloke behind the desk where it had all come from and got on his high horse accusing him of nicking police property,  it piissed all over Sierra Cosworth's & Escort RS Turbo's.

Correct.  That sensor is just for auto lights and wipers.

Driver assist pack screen looks like this:

Good to hear, I don't need them actually, I'm not big fans of them since they just doesn't making you driving better.

Yes, that's right.  I just meant Titanium release date was 2008 for Mondeo, so it seems odd that Focus had it 3 years earlier.

I think Mk4 Mondeo kept the Ghia trim until facelift in 2010.  But they also had a Ghia X which is the one with wood effect trim iirc.  Though it did make sense to hold on to the Ghia name with the Mondeo, when those weren't really aimed at younger drivers anyway.  Of course, the younger drivers that Titanium was aimed towards in the 2000's will now be approaching 50, so would be interesting to see whether they still preferred that look now or whether they'd prefer a return to wood...whether it's generational or age related.  Personally I've never been a fan of the wood effect trim.

I liked the wood trim in my 1970 Mk2 cortina 1600E and my 2000E corsair lol.😁 But it was real wood, not the plastic crap of later years.

We've done our usual trick here and turned this into another nostalgia fest. Sorry, Thomas!

But yes, I thought the 1600E was one of Ford's best ever efforts - Lotus chassis, simpler 1600GT engine, smart wheels and interior - what's not to like (apart from me never getting one!)

My one was KST 240G, gold with vynil roof. Hindsight is a wonderfull thing and as usual i wish id kept it. Saw one just last week on Ebay £23k, i was sorely tempted and had my manager not objected i would have bought it, sacrificing my focus to do so.

That might be a bit too simple!  Shall we bother with a cold air intake?  Long tract?  Ram air effect?  Nah, just suck hot air straight from the back of the radiator, that'll do.

Saved the carb from freezing of a winter morning lol.

You could often move the intake to suit the season on older cars. Can't remember if you could on the Cortina though. On my Mk1 I ingeniously (well, I thought so anyway) replaced the worn out carb with a big Stromberg on an adaptor with a mesh "sports" filter. Perhaps surprisingly, it went very well!

How would you have coped with the typical twin SU set up as on my MG Midget - one intake pointing front, one rear?😀

Looks like the heater box has got a better intake than the engine!

You controlled It by pulling a knob out for heat, It was either fully on or fully off. Similarly by physically opening a flap on each side of the footwells you directed the air to your feet or the screen, couldn't have both.

The output was volcanic though - you really could drive hood down on a cold day in a cocoon of heat.

(That's not a picture of my actual car, btw, like Derek I wish I'd hung onto that one).

Whist the Miata Mk1/Mk2 the air intake sitting toasty of top exhaust manifold...

The Air Intake on my Cavalier was very good. There was a Thermostatically controlled Diverter Flap that took Intake Air directly from the top of the Exhaust Manifold and the Flap gradually opened to take all the Air from the Front Grill as the Underbonnet warmed up.

It was probably operating a valve in the hot water feed to the matrix. My early BMC cars all had that. In theory you could vary the flow rate to get some control of the heat but it was obviously very imprecise.

Theory was the operative word!😀
