I am worried/wet belt.

I'd agree with Botus if he'd said that he meant mainly the newer VAG stuff, some versions of the 2.0 TSI have been shocking unreliable.

Modern is definitely the missing word.

It's the same with all manufacturers though isn't it? Basically any popular car sold between 2010 and 2017 had some sort of fatal mechanical issues. Ford/Peugeot wet belts, BMW timing chains, VAG timing chains/piston rings/DSG transmissions, Toyota CVT transmissions. It just seemed that that time period was a real shocker for car manufacturers worldwide.

VAG have had some uber reliable products over the years, as have Ford (HCS were bulletproof, Duratecs were as good as bulletproof), BMW had the legendary M54/M57 engines etc)

For some reason it all went to ***** in the late noughties.

  • Hi, I definitely wouldn't swap one wetbelt Focus for another wetbelt Focus. The 1.0 Honda Civic also uses wetbelt so be careful if you do go for a Civic. Personally I'd go for the Skoda

sure a mk3 golf is dead reliable - if you replace the trailing arm bushes, the gearbox and the door locks every week - the rest pretty much goes forever - but a few years after that all the suspension arms and the pistons in the engine were made of chocolate, then they went downhill fast

My PD130 wore out the camshaft and smashed the lifters.

Bought a 130 because forum guys said chocolate cam only happens to 150s.  Moral of the story...don't believe everything you read online!

(By contrast, my CR140 has been totally reliable since 2018.)

But the earlier 2.0 PD had issues with the oil pump drive. I only found out about it after I sold my Audi A3 2..0 FRI with that engine, or no doubt I'd have been paranoid !😀

I had one of those too, without any issues.   (Albeit only for a short time.)

Porous heads were a potential failure on the earliest 2.0 PD as well, although that was sorted fairly quickly as far as I remember.

Sorry Tom, I don't wish to be disrespectful but I'M looking on the net for an answer and it relates to the question I posted. Basically, we've determined that my Focus has a wet belt system. Yesterday I was behind a Focus that had a hybrid badge on and I was curious to know whether that also has a wet belt system. Similarly I'm sure they have hybrid Pumas. I guess I could approach Ford? but would rather not

Depends what year Focus. Mk 3/3.5 to 2018 had wet cambelt and oil pump belt. Mk 4 2018 on (such as your current car) has the revised engine with just a wet oil pump belt. Puma is the same as Mk 4 Focus.

**NB it's not a full hybrid (FHEV) like a Toyota Corolla btw, just a mild hybrid (MHEV) where the engine always drives the car but gets a little bit of help from the hybrid system, typically at low speed.

As Roger says, the MHEV engine in Mk4 Focus & Puma is the same basic engine as yours, chain for cams and wetbelt for oil pump.

Not really a way to avoid the oil pump wet belt on any current or recent petrol Ford, other than the 2.3 ecoboost in the Focus ST iirc. At least it was available with the auto.

@fiesta boy just out of interest, what’s the mileage on your Focus and what’s your annual usage? With a similar age Focus,  I wonder why you are so concerned about the wet belt oil pump. Unless you have very high usage mileage rates, if you follow or preferably better the recommended oil service (and other maintenance) schedules, you’ll more than likely be OK.  I’ve also read a lot of ecoBoom horror stories on the iWeb, and that could give you sleepless nights, but most of those appear related to older wet timing belt models and/or were often associated with poor maintenance.  I think that there are less reports of engine failures with the newer timing chain ecoboost models. My mileage/usage is relatively low, I will go for early/regular oil changes (and other servicing) — so I’m trying to remain positive. Probably helps that I have an extended warranty, and will likely exchange my 73 plate Focus for something else within the next couple of years!

My car is on a 20 plate, with 22,500 miles odd? I am the 2nd owner. I don't do a lot of mileage yearly ; possibly I drive no more than 1,500? I am a worrier, by nature sadly. Mind you, being 70 (which to me makes me wonder- being morbid). My son has a newer 22 plate Focus St line and drives around 8 to 10,000 yearly and his mileage is about a 1,000 more than mine already, I believe.

I am slightly torn. One minute I think I've had the car around 18 months now and it's been reliable motor and it has everything it should but then I think I wouldn't mind a Toyota C HR HYBRID? I've worked hard all my life so I can afford it, 2nd hand . Then I think No!  (You are 70. Perhaps, talk to your son. See what he thinks of the Toyota and help him purchase a newer car of his choice? Not a Merc / Audi or anything expensive like that . Oh I don't know. Sorry you guys must be bored with my rantings and I wouldn't blame you. Forgive me.

You won't go wrong with a CHR👍

@fiesta boy Don’t apologise for sharing worries on this forum, they are  mostly 😉 a friendly bunch, and if owning a Ford was without worry there wouldn’t be much to talk about!  Personally I can relate to your concerns. I’ve had similar about my own Focus, which I bought earlier this year, and then started reading all the horror stories about wet belt ecoBoom engines. On balance, I’ve decided most of these relate to the earlier wet timing belt models, and if looked after, the later generation (timing chain) ecoboost engines appear more reliable. Being at a similar stage in life, retired, with low mileage requirements, I’ve also subsequently contemplated buying Toyota (or other brand) to circumvent ‘what if’ worries around my own Focus. However, I like the Focus and much prefer ‘car-shaped’ hatchbacks rather than oversized SUV type cars.  Although I do like the shape/design of the Corolla, the 2L model I would go for has limited boot space and the rear seat legroom is really poor.

I have a strange fancy for the C-HR myself, though I can see no particular practical advantage over a Corolla (except I believe it's towing capacity is higher?). Must be the wacky looks that appeal.

I would say it you want one, go for it. But do have a read/ask a few questions here:

I lurk on there for possible future interest and have found it to be a helpful and friendly forum so far (as here, of course😃).
