Battery Resting Voltage

Featured Replies

Good evening all,

I have a new ST- line X. Its the 1.0 ecoboost mhev 155ps with 7 speed DCT gearbox. Since new, I have had issues with the panoramic roof venting function. When pressing the sunroof switch once, the roof should go to the vent position only, but around 80% of the time, it opens completely.

On Sunday morning, I had an "auto hold assist malfunction" warning message which only cleared once I'd switched the ignition off and back on again.

Reading about battery "resting voltage" i see that if the battery voltage is too low, it can cause electrical system malfunctions. I measured this voltage after an overnight rest and got 12.17v with the engine off and ignition off. According to info I found on t'internet, this is too low and equates to the battery being only charged to around 50%.

It's been back to the dealer who found no issue with the sunroof, despite having the car all day, yet as soon as I picked the car up, the sunroof played up immediately. The car starts instantly, so the battery seems to be able to produce enough CCA to start the engine.

The sunroof will vent correctly if I use the global unlock key fob function, which then seems to indicate an issue with the actual sunroof switch.

It's going back to the dealer again on Friday and it seems as though they're not sure what the problem is. Do you guys believe it may be a battery issue? I'm contemplating asking for a new battery.

Any guidance is gratefully accepted! I love the car but find myself becoming increasingly frustrated with the car is it only a few weeks old.

Unfortunately I'm old enough to remember when dynamos were still commonplace and alternators were replacing them.  With a dynamo, at idle, you would often see the charge light flicker, or get a z

  • Well there's a collection of words that you don't often see in the same sentence 🤣

  • It will need to be charged for a minimum of 12 hours before it is fitted to your car.

  1. Use FORScan and change the default SOC from the factory set limit of 80% and increase it to 95%
  2. If the battery is less than 3 years old, then charge it with a Smart Charger for a minimum of 12 hours. Make sure to connect the negative charger lead to the chassis earth point, NOT the battery negative.
  3. If the battery is more than 3 years old then replace it with the Yuasa YBX7096 - Disregard any information saying it won't fit or that it's not for your car. It will fit just fine and it is the battery used by most of us who have replaced  the battery on a mk4 Focus.

For diagnostic use only:

Thanks for the info Unofix. As the cars still under the manufacturers warranty, I'll let them have one more go at it.

I've heard of FORscan, is this software still available for windows 11.

EDIT: just seen your reply!!

Cheers, Steve.

Works on Windows 7 through to Windows 11 (but possibly not Vista).

Cheers for the info 👍 👌

@Miniman  I have the same Focus model and have adjusted the battery target SOC to 95% using the Forscan software as outlined by @unofix. No problems observed and it has certainly reduced, but not eliminated, the requirement for top ups with an external charger.

Thanks Mad-mushroom (Mike).

Unofix sent me a link to the FORscan software download, so its going on to my laptop pronto!

Cheers, Steve.

Just ordered the cable too!

Can’t say that I’ve observed any problems with the operation of the pan roof, but being very aware of how ’feeble’ the battery is on my Focus, I only operate the roof while the engine is running.  Also, TBH, I didn't know there was a separate vent position, I really must test that out.

I only knew about the panoramic roof vent, as my old 2020 Focus Vignale had the same sunroof, and would definitely just vent on the first push of the switch.

To be honest the vent works better with the engine on as the system voltage is then about 13.2v. It doesn't vent 100% of the time, but is better with the engine on.

My cable for FORscan arrived today that unfixable put me on to, so I'll see what happens on Friday at the dealer.

Cheers, Steve.

I hope that you get some sense from your Ford dealer.  I doubt whether an approved Ford Service Centre they will be help modify the battery target SOC –– so using Forscan will most likely be your way ahead.

A question for the OPP - how reliable is the auto stop/start?

Not the OP, but I do have the same model Focus, MHEV ecoboost 155 bps engine etc.  Usually, I hit the button to disable Auto Stop-Start as soon as start my Focus! That is largely because of my low mileage and well-documented problems of maintaining battery charge. Just occasionally, when on a longer journeys, I do let the stop-start system do it's own thing and I can't say that I have observed any problems.

At the moment is appears to work OK as long as I'm not loading the battery too much! However, switching it on and off via the small button on the centre console can be very hit and miss, almost as though the switch contacts are dirty.

I'm wondering if this is all due to the battery voltage, which is way too low.

Cheers, Steve.

Tbh, I'm not expecting much from them, without name dropping, they're a large multi make car dealer on the south coast.

They've got a paint protection film company coming tomorrow to apply new stone chip protection film at the base of each rear wheel arch, because the original ones are peeling off already. I also found another Focus in their showroom, which hadn't yet been sold, but fhe film was already peeling off!

Compared to my old 2020 Focus Vignale, I find my new car doesn't have the quality of build it should. The paint finish for instance is pretty poor, but that's new cars for you I suppose.

On the subject of altering the SoC value from 80 to 95%, now I have my cable and the FORscan software, how straightforward is it to up the SoC percentage?

Thanks to everyone who has commented on my issues, the comments are very much appreciated.

Cheers, Steve.

Plenty on this forum are much more experienced with Forscan software than me, but it is fairly straightforward. As a novice, I was a bit concerned and really wanted to know what I was doing so I did very carefully check multiple related posts in these forums (and the relevant YouTube video), and familiarised myself with the software console before starting.  I did make some crude notes which I could send over if you are uncertain how to proceed. However, others might be better able to cross-reference an appropriate detailed forum post.

If you haven't already done so you'll need to apply for the free extended license from Forscan, which permits parameter changes.

Just tested this pan roof venting option on my own Focus.  It can work but seems to be a little hit & miss. That or I'm just too heavy handed with my single flick of the switch.

Just like mine then Mike! You have to be really quick pushing the switch, but this improves with the engine on (sometimes!).

Thanks muchly Mike,

I wasn't aware of the extended licence so will look into that now. I'll also find some posts about using FORscan on here.

Thanks, Steve.

Evening both,

Well, my car is back home and the local company that did the paint protection film replacement in the rear door shuts have done an excellent job.

They tested the battery using their automatic tester and that showed the battery to be OK. They also checked for any error codes and nothing was found (as expected)!

So now its time to look at FORscan to up the SoC figure to 95%. Oddly, the sunroof vent worked perfectly when we picked it up.

Time to enjoy what is a lovely car despite these teething problems.

Cheers, Steve.

Evening all,

Well, things are back to normal, sunroof playing up etc! If I buy and fit the Yuasa battery recommended (YBX7096), will the BMS need recalibrating and if so, can that be easily done?

I'm not ready to use FORscan yet as I need to research how to change the battery SoC with messing anything else up!!

Cheers, Steve.

It needs to be done by an 8 year old, but some older members have managed to master it 🤣

No tools or equipment required.

How to reset the BMS method 2

CAUTION: The reference at the beginning of the video saying that the BMS should be reset after charging the battery in incorrect.

The Battery Monitoring System (BMS) should only be reset if a new battery has been fitted.

Brilliant Unofix, that made me laugh. No tools? Not even a hammer?

I'll get on and order the mighty Yuasa then thanks.
