Ecoboost servicing

Featured Replies

Hi all. After doing some reading I’ve decided to either attempt an oil change or get my local garage to do one for me

I rang my local Ford dealer and they quoted £150, but checked my servicing and I’m apparently overdue a major 4yr service (all filters, spark plugs) and they quoted £450. Lesser 2yr service around 200 ish which sounded like everything expect air filter and spark plugs.

how important is it to do? I was planning to do air filter myself this week anyway and then just get the oil filter done and oil changed. But now I’m not sure.

I’ve got a 2018 1.0 ecoboost and heard a lot of stories about them. I don’t particularly fancy shelling out £400 at the moment but equally don’t want to run into issues with the wet belt etc.

car has felt a bit more sluggish than usual lately so wondering if spark plugs would be worthwhile. It’s done around 80k miles.

  • Yes.  But make sure they use the correct oil.

  • I've just done a close up and the bits between the Ribs don't look that great.

Regardless, you are living on borrowed time, a main service at £450 is the least of your problems. You have a real possibility that your neglected 80,000 mile 1.0 Ecoboost will soon go ecoboom unless you get the wet timing belt and wet oil pump belt changed in the next few weeks.

Cost of wet belt changes start at around £900 and go up to £2600 at some main Ford dealers.

Thanks - just checked last service was December 2023 at 45k. Currently mileage is 75k. Looking online suggest longer time period but I know that’s very optimistic.

I will look more into that, however not sure we will still own it before it hits 95/100k. Also if finances allow so will get some quotes from garages I know well.

service wise, what do you recommend ? A major service or to prioritise the oil possibly first

Yes, as a matter of some urgency

Use only the exact oil specified by Ford for the 1.0 Ecoboost.

Remember that the 10 years or 100,000miles is the MAXIMUM the wet timing belt is expected to last.

Thank you and noted. What would you recommend for asap? A full service presumably or just oil?

i think my local independent I usually use would be a decent bit less than ford and I would make sure they know about the oil however I think they do anyway after speaking to them earlier

If it hasn't had an oil change in 30k then I wouldn't bother now.  Just get rid asap, the wetbelt will already be degrading.

If it's a Mk4 on 2 yearly intervals, the maximum mileage for that is every 18k.

I had my wet belt changed in April this year, it cost me £650. Car had done 57k miles.

Was that at an Oxfam garage or some other charity ? 🤔

What made you want to change the wet belt on a 5 year old car with only 57,000 miles ?

I can’t change it now, just looking at best possible option aside from replacing the wet belt this week. It’s something we could look to get done within the next 12 months.

im just not sure what to focus on (no pun intended). Is it worth paying 450 for Ford to do their 4yr service? Compared to their other option which is half the price but without the spark plugs

or just have the oil done asap. I’m sure I could do this myself

not had any oil lights etc come on

Not worth paying Ford for anything.  Just get the oil changed as cheap as possible, but making sure it's the right spec.  No point wasting money on spark plugs or Ford checks when the belt will probably break before you get round to changing it anyway.

I will have a good look into it today. If anyone who sees this knows of someone reliable/a specialist around Northampton/kettering area that won’t cost an arm & a leg it would be good to know.
I did see one in Romford PL Automotive with a lot of good reviews at 850 I think

I always use Formula 1 for the main, yearly service and MOT

Do you have one near you?

  • Author

Yeah though I have a trusted independent I usually use for stuff

quoted 1600 at a local ford specialist and 2k plus at ford garage down the road, wowza

Use the 'Oxfam garage' that @Julie Gail used. They only charge £650 and fit it while you wait 🤣🤣

That looks like a Mk3 service schedule.  Every year or 12,500 miles.  You're well overdue a service in that case, and have a wet cambelt as well as the wet oil pump belt.

Both of those services are only an oil & filter change.  The 8th year service includes a brake check with wheels off, so that adds some extra labour time.

The 9th year service will include spark plugs & air filter.

Thanks for that, really appreciate it. Having re checked with where I got it from it has had 2nd year service in 2020, 3rd year 2021 and 4th year 2022. Regretting neglecting the servicing but want to get back on track with it. They’ve recommended the 8yr service but as you say it’s just an oil and filter change and brake check - we had new brake discs and padded fitted a few months back (plus pollen he said). So with the online price minus a discount available at £245. Still £100 more than what they quoted purely for oil filter change on its own. I’m capable myself of doing the pollen filter and air filter

So would I be right in thinking that unless I want the ford stamp on my service record, I could just get my regular garage to do an oil and filter change to save £100?

Thanks for looking it up! Does the above change anything ? I’ve rang up and got it booked in for an oil and filter change next week tentatively. And ordered an air/pollen filter to pick up tomorrow

Only that it means that it has missed quite a few services. You seriously need to get the wet belts replaced at the earliest opportunity.
