Any good tips to look after a diesel car?

has anyone heard of GAP insurance? just had a read online and it seems like a good idea.

what do you guys think?

Standard "upsell" for sales people when selling new cars along with paint protection, fabric protection, alloy wheel repair insurance, blah blah.

Lots of caveats in the ones I've seen, and many car insurance policies include "new for old" cover for 1/2 years.

As Tom mentions, might be worth doing the sums on a used car depending on estimated depreciation, but never taken it out myself, always preferred putting funds in a savings account "just in case". (Or a jam jar if you're Stephen! 😀).

Surely that would cause a blockage? Seriously, I used to use Miller's occasionally if having to fill up with dubious fuel from certain supermarkets. I very much doubt I'd bother now, might just a

The one I was looking at is 240 for 4 years.

That seems about the right sort of price.

You need to read very carefully the terms of the GAP insurance and just exactly what they will pay out.

When I used to have company lease vehicles we always took out separate GAP insurance (usually from a company called VIP GAP). It was easy to know exactly what it was covering as the vehicle was brand new.

Do you guys put any additives in their fuel tank?

As mentioned Archoil D-Max in every tank, if you want EGR to last good mileage (they don't last forever), less soot so less regens, and clean and lubricated injectors and a lubricated pump.

Run it on that, don't waste your money on Super Diesel, change the oil often and it'll do 200,000 miles plus, so long as it's not an Ecoblue 2.0

Is this stuff actually any good? The Reason I would start to use it from my next service but don't know much about this and I see it mentioned a lot.

Use it straight away, 1ml per litre in every tank

Yes, it's very good, my car loves it, smooth as silk and more responsive.

Couple of MPG gains but nothing much to write home about, it does 60MPG anyway

On your first tankful add 5ml to cover the fuel in the system, then work out what you are going to add each fill up and add and fill

Add Archoil first, then fill😉

I will have a browse online and see if I can get a bottle to try it out. Thanks

Yes.
Cetane improver, detergent, ester based pump lubricant, Premium diesel at half the differential. Fine by me!

I fill up at Costco and they only do premium diesel, so would using Archoil still be worth it?

I know it is an expensive bottle but if you are getting Costco "Premium" diesel (actually unknown proportion of additives, like the rest of them?) I'd say try it  to see if there's any difference (although extra pump lubrication can't be bad?)
If you are away and don't get Costco then you can use that instead - just my opinion.

Thanks for the quick reply.

Yeah they are unknown additives. I've a had a browse on the web and nobody knows what's in it lol

I may get a 500ml bottle to test it out or thinking about it maybe just use Archoil AR6400-D MAX Pro once or twice a year.

Again, sorry, I'd suggest at least once per month (depending on mileage) I think the additives (Cetane, detergent, lubricant etc) need regular/constant use?
There are other additives that appear to be a "1 shot" boost but I have never used them and, in any case little but often seems to be the best way - again, always up to you.

No worries I appreciate all the help as this is my first diesel as well so the OP has done me a favour with this thread although I’ve hijacked it.

So for the D600 they say not to overdose or and if you use it once,  follow up with the D6900.

I’ll be doing 10000 miles or close so it could well last me a year with my 40 litre tank according to what they say.

Every tank.

Constant detergent

Constant lubrication

Your high pressure pump will thank you.

It lasts ages anyway.

That’s for the D6900 isn’t it, not the D6400?

Yes, sorry 6900 D-Max all the time

6400 as a one off, before you start using 6900

Once you're using 6900, all the time, you'll never need 6400 again anyway👍

Would you still use 6900 if you were using Premium diesel?  I’m using Costcos premium diesel already.

@DaveT70 Sorry I forgot to quote you in the post above

You don't need to waste your money on premium/super diesel if you're using D-Max 6900

It has all the detergents and lubrication (and more) than premium has PLUS it has the Cetane booster also, which premium diesel no longer has.

And it works out cheaper to fill the tank.

I use Tesco Diesel with D-Max 6900 in every tank and she runs like a dream

Unless the Costco is cheaper already, of course

That’s the thing Costcos premium is cheaper than the cheapest normal stuff here lol

You're OK then.

Use it to get the additional detergents and lubrication and, more importantly, the cetane booster

well my air con works now 🙂

halfords only filled it and it still didnt work but after going to a garage today, they used vacuum to get rid of the old oil and gas and filled it with new oil and gas and now it works.

that made me think it didnt work because it had contaminated oil still in system?
