Focus Mk4 1.0 ecoboost low temperature

Featured Replies

I'm looking for help replacing the thermostat in my 2021 Focus 1.0. I have done some research but can't find a definitive video or guide. Most info online is on older variants of this car/engine. There seems to be several different variants of this engine with different cooling arrangements so even finding the correct part is causing me trouble. Some comments even talk about the car having 2 thermostats.

My car seems to be running cold and it is more obvious now that the outside temperature is dropping. The temp gauge never gets to the 90C midpoint, it sits down near 60C most of the time so I thought I'd just test the thermostat to check there was no problem. As thermostats are normally a cheap part, I'd buy one just in case I need to change it rather than wait for a new part to arrive and having to drain the cooling system twice but this is proving more difficult than I expected.

I've found traditional looking thermostats that claim to be for this car but they all seem to be 50-55C rated which seems way to cold. I've also found some that are rated at 90-95C which seems more normal. There is also a complete plastic thermostat housing listed (part number h6Bg-8575-aa) but I can't find the opening temperature for this part. If it is a 55C part then it is unlikely to fix my problem. The pictures online of this look similar to what is in the car but I've not taken the old one out and I don't really want to replace the complete unit if I don't need to. The ford parts catalogue I have found online does not seem to list the thermostat as a separate part from the complete housing.

Does anyone know if there is a 90-95C thermostat in this car where it is located? I'd also like to know if there is a 2nd 50-55C thermostat and where is is located out of interest!

Thanks, Dave.

All new engines from ford (2010 onwards) use a plastic housing integrated thermostat, so you just replace that entire housing.

Hi,

I found this a while ago and saved it. Hope it helps a little:

Thanks.  Looks like I've got away with a silly error there.  Glad no-one's highlighted it!

On a serious note...I was questioning the '100ps' in the title.  There wasn't a 100ps chain engine as far as I'm aware.  However...on closer inspection, the diagram is definitely for the chain engine.  So I'm not sure what to make of that now. 🤔

The old wetbelt engine definitely had two thermostats.  Second one was round the back of the engine.  But I can't find any reference to a second stat on the chain engine.  Interestingly, I can also only find a 54c stat for the conventional side-mounted stat housing, but that seems very odd as well.  I'm wondering whether there's an integrated electronic stat somewhere that can be controlled variably depending on engine conditions, rather than the archaic wax stat.

I'm sure @JW1982 must know the thermostat setup on the chain engines?

Hi Tom,

I am sure I recall well, but I got this picture from another forum when I asked about the B7DC engine cooling system (B7DC is the mhev and B7DA is the non-mhev) and another user posted that picture. I saw the B7 engine code and assumed it is correct. Also, when looking at my engine, it looks the same. I think I was afraid of leaks back then, and I wanted to know where around the engine to look, and in case something appears to have an idea if it is coolant or not. And two years ago I did have a leak, but it was oil, not coolant.

However, I also remember these engines have two stats, but now I don't know if I read that on this forum or how I've heard of it. But I cannot find any reference for the second one.

Thanks for the replies. The pic does look lime my setup so I am just going to have to wait (it will be next week before I can do without the car for a few days) and take the old one apart before I order any spares. I plan to take the housing off and test the thermostat that is inside (and hope it's a marked 90C). It looks like it just contains a normal metal thermostat based on this photo of a 2nd hand unit I found so hopefully has the temp stamped on it:

Considering that, it's ashame they make it so the entire thing has to be replaced, so wasteful.

So what is the temp for thermostat in housing above? And did you managed to find 90C thermostat location? As well did you managed to solve your issue?
