oil drain issue

Featured Replies

hello guys

just done an oil change on my car.

5 liters came out but only 3 liters went back in.

could anyone tell me why that is please?

many thanks guys

Did you only have 3 litres available? 😀

I think the capacity of that engine with a filter change is supposed to be about 4 litres? Perhaps the 5 litres that came out was contaminated with diesel due to frequent DPF regeneration failures, faulty fuel injectors, or worn piston rings allowing fuel to enter the crankcase. Did the oil which came out smell of Diesel?

Did you re-check the oil level after running the engine for long enough to get it warm?

Assume you mean you have drained oil and changed filter, added new oil and after only 3 litres (are you sure?) it is full on the dipstick?
Has the engine been run (normally you add more to top up after filter is filled)?
Has dipstick gone further in or some other issue with it (which is very strange but only thing I can think of)?
Any other suggestions?
Edit: Above is another route to a solution, as said, how much is it supposed to take?

many thanks guys

i just went out again and it was on minimum mark so topped it up with an extra liter so now i have put 4 liters in.

for some reason i thought given a few minutes then the oil should have settled so i just assumed it was still full.

so 4 liters in is right?

car has not been run yet.

i think the oil does have tiny bit smell of diesel, not too sure.

Top mark on the dipstick is right, whatever litres that happens to be. If you haven't run the engine yet and you changed the filter then it is very likely to need some more oil after it has been run.
