Rear Speakers Stopped Working! Help.....

Hey Everyone, I need your collective experience!

I have a 2008 Focus TDCI with the Travelpilot FX stereo/Sat-Nav system. The rear Speakers have just stopped working altogether- I tried adjusting the fader, but it just keeps the front Speakers on. I tried a full audio reset & a full stereo reset from within the stereo menus - neither made a difference.

Someone suggested pulling the fuse to reset the unit, but I don't have a radio code & I assume I'll need one when I power it back up.

Any suggestions would be welcome to help this Newbie out!

Thanks in advance,

Brian.

Welcome to the family Brian!

So both rear Speakers stopped working at the same time? have you had the car from new or is it a recent addition to the family?

Have you checked the rear Speakers are still working and that the wiring hasnt come loose. either at the Speakers of the back of the radio.

So even when you adjust the fader to the rear the front Speakers stay on?

This could be a fault with the radio as if the rear Speakers were faulty and you adjusted to the rear I would have thought it would all go silent. Could always try plugging any old radio in to test and see if it's the head unit?

Thanks Guys-

jeebowhite I've had the car from new, and yes both stopped working together.

stevegtuk I haven't checked any wiring yet as I can't easily acess it & was hoping it was a software problem or something.

jamesm182 Yes both front spakers stay on when I fade them off, which led me to the same thought as you. Unfortunately I dont have an old stereo & don't know how to remove mine.

I'm just kinda hoping somone has had this problem before and knows the cause before I need to take the car into a specialist......

Best place to start is to remove the stereo and check the wiring loom behind it is ok. It could be the wire has come loose from the harness in the back of the radio and a little wiggle will bring it back to life

Thanks jeebowhite that's probably what I need to do, but as I said earlier I really don't know how to remove it and don't want to damage anything!

The only thing that makes me still thing it's a software & not wiring problem is the fader not fading off the fronts. I might try pulling the fuse- if i can work out which it is and also find the code!

Its just so frustrating!

Make sure you have the code, although, I dont recall if your stereo uses one? Even if the code is "lost" you should be able to get one off eBay cheap enough!

As for the removal, it should be a case of placing the right keys in the holes and pull. I cant remember, but dont believe yours uses Torx screws...

OK jamesm182 I'll look into that, it has bluetooth but no USB. I don't know what is possible, but I'll just Google it. Cheers

As for removal of the unit jeebowhite, I think i need to remove al the fascia from the gearstick upeards, which I'm reluctant to do :wacko:there are no removal holes on the front of the unit...... I'll look on eBay for a code though and try pulling the fuse first. I would've thought the code would be in the handbook though :(

I'm just concerned about making things worse or damaging something if I try removing it all!

As long as you are not heavy handed, you shouldnt find yourself damaging anything. I dont recall if there is a slightly easier way to access the stereo for removal I dont believe you have to remove everything.

OK, thanks. I might have to try and Google that as well then, but I'm pretty sure all the fascia neeeds to be removed....

Is it possible for a loom to just become loose after 5 yrs without being touched? I'm still hoping it's a software problem!!

Its not impossible, the car will vibrate when driving so it could be that it wasnt secured as well as it should have been, thus shaking it loose.

The keycard should have been in the handbook area, but to be honest, you probably need to remove the radio to get the serial number before you can get a radio code.

The Key code for mine is on a sticker that is stuck into the handbook wallet with a bit of masking tape. There is also a keycode card but no code on it. You may find its in there somewhere

Cheers btmaldon I have a blank code card too! Unfortunately there is no other code in the wallet though. I think I need to see if it needs one first

Quick update-

I removed the unit but everything is attached.

I removed all fuses but that didn't make any difference.

Now getting very frustrated :-(

so your still without rear Speakers?

It sounds like it might be a broken wire somewhere?

i would expect just one side to go off with a broken wire, not both at the same time.

The only thing I can think of would be to strip the rear Speakers out and indicidualy test them, then remove the stereo to test continuity on the wires.

its just sooooo annoying!!

I was wondering more if you have a short out between the wires for the rear Speakers?

How would a short occur?

Also I'm still hoping to find a way to fully reset the unit. Removing power didnt reset ant preset functions except the time

easiest way for a full reset is to disconnect the battery for half hour or so.

As for the short, it could be if the wires have overheated and are now touching behind the stereo, so may be worth checking a bit more closely?

I'll try the reset and if no joy I'll have another look for a short.

Results to follow......(fingers crossed!)

All this work on the head unit and you dont even know if the rear Speakers are working anyway

Take them out and plug them intto the front Speakers wiring to make sure they work first otherwise all the work you are doing now will be a complete waist of time.

On some cars the Speakers are driven off a parallel feed.

If you expose the back of the right speaker you may find a double loom, one set leading to the speaker and the other leading off to the left side speaker.
