Battery is the answer. Technically you only need it to start the car, then you can unplug it and everything still works(1 fun fact that came from college)

You can, however, there is no reserve supply. If you draw too much current the voltage will drop too much and the engine may cut out.

You also run the risk of high voltage spikes and ripple on the 12V+ feed to everything - shouldn't really be an issue if everything is designed properly but can make electronics misbehave.
