Phil 87
Yeah I normally press the lock button before I set off, especially if I'll be stopping in traffic. Anyone know if there was a reason why the cars don't lock automatically or just Ford being lazy?
Willy
One reason was that the doors wouldn't unlock after an impact so the feature was removed.
Phil 87
One reason was that the doors wouldn't unlock after an impact so the feature was removed. That's a good point, makes me wonder what happens in cars that have this feature like my brother's Mini Hopefully there is something that will unlock the doors if the airbag is deployed or something. But isn't it the same for me if I always lock my doors anyway?
Willy
I guess auto locking and pressing the button would be the same thing.
alexp999
I think in the event of an accident the doors are supposed to unlock. I would imagine they found it unreliable so in the end turned the auto locking off
Phil 87
I think in the event of an accident the doors are supposed to unlock. I would imagine they found it unreliable so in the end turned the auto locking off Yes hopefully that's true. I know when you open the door from the inside it opens even when locked, so maybe this is the same even after a crash. I suppose the real problem would be if the crash is so bad that you can't get yourself out of the car and someone comes to help, will they be able to open the door from the outside? alexp999
That is the problem, if the system is unable to unlock the doors anyone from the outside would not be able to open the door. It may even be that trying to open the door from the inside is not possible if there is no power/signal to the locks. If you think about it, compared to the reaction time of the airbags going off, it takes a long time to turn the lock mechanism during a crash. Clarky2013
I want explosive bolts on my doors like the aventadors , maybe it'll be an option on the mk8!
Phil 87
I want explosive bolts on my doors like the aventadors , maybe it'll be an option on the mk8! Yeah that would be awesome, wasn't there a Mercedes that has those, and they go off automatically when the car is upside down? That would be a bit scary if it goes wrong and the door suddenly flies off when you're just cruising along on the motorway lol.
alexp999
My dad's RCZ has explosive bolts on the bonnet. I think it causes the bonnet to flip forwards though, to provide a safer impact area for pedestrians...

Lol, sounds more like a weapon to attack pedestrians with :P Does it just raise the bonnet up a bit so that it can flex a bit without hitting the engine underneath?
alexp999
I think because the bonnet is that much lower being a coupe, it lifts the bonnet so the pedestrian is not hit only in the legs and then twisted over. It provides more surface area to come in contact with or something...

Why just stop at the legs when you can smash them in the face too?

Anyone know if there was a reason why the cars don't lock automatically or just Ford being lazy? I found out today, Apparently according to ford it`s something to with safety in an accident but I have since heared it is possible for ford to do if they change the regional setting to american.
