I decided it was easier to change my own name to match my number plate. My name is now SA14FDE. Not my actual regards above.

  • Private number plates? Pffffffft ;)

  • You can make a car appear older than what it actually is, but you're not allowed to make the appear newer For instance on a 13 plate you can have a 62 plate and backwards, but you're not allowed a 63

Private number plates? Pffffffft ;)

I sold my car with a private plate, it takes over from the existing number plate for a fee - which I paid. The new owner of the only has to pay a fee if they wanted the original plate or similar back

Buying a plate as a gift is fine, the plate is put onto retention for a minimum of 1 year (max 3 I think - don't quote me lol), from retention it can be used on a car anytime within that time frame provided you fill in the details of the swap and of course not use it on a car until the dvla have sent the certificate and v5c back in that particular reg

Not keen on the idea of private regs anymore hence why I sold mine with the car

Great many thanks!

Plate retention is now down to £80 from £105 and now last 10 years.

So any plate you purchase you have to pay again in 10yrs to keep It??

No, it means if you take it off the car you can hold it for 10 years as a document, if you put it on a car you keep it there as long as you like.

Ok understand now haha,

I don't get the bit where it says immediate transfer because surely you still have a period on your old plates before you get new ones made for it??

There are a few new changes, but you should be able to get the plates made while its in progress, so you can then put them on as soon as you get the douments.

Ok thanks any places with good prices for new plates or just use halfords?

You can only get plates made up when they send you the relevant documents. Plate makers need proof of ownership before they print them out.

Ok thanks even halfords

Yep even halfords

You'll get a V750 from DVLA which you take to the person making the plate. You may also need both parts of your license too.

i just got my v750 through from newreg, bought a plate for my son's 18th.

very good turnaround, only took 10 days to get the paperwork and plates, just need to get the v5 and v750 off to the dvla ready for his birthday at the end of may..got a good deal on the plate, other sites wanted over £1000 got the plate we wanted inc fees and reg plates for £495.

I'd love a private plate but good ones are way too expensive to consider these days. It would be good if the DVLA gave us more freedom to make up our own number plates - just let anyone register a number plate if it's not in use. Obviously the private plate industry is huge and wouldn't stand for that though lol.

Got both of ours direct from the D.V.L.A. website.

Where's the best place to get a plate dvla website?
