Featured Replies

I plan on doing a fill backup of windows 8 (already done using aomei recovery) then I will download 10 and do a second backup, if 10 annoys me, I will rollback the backup like it never happened :-D

  • Yes exactly, and especially when we can install from a USB stick onto an SSD, the whole install takes hardly any time. I share your cynicism there. I never let Windows 8.1 have access to my Microsof

  • You can extract your license key to be sure using ProduKey, I've used it a few times on clients machines to get license keys before installing new OS Link here: http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/product_c

Pretty happy with Windows 8.1 right now - runs flawlessly, and quickly on both of my laptops. Windows 7 feels sluggish, unoptimized, and dated IMO.

Totally agree tbh, I have a 7 desktop and bought an 8 (now 8.1) laptop for work use. After buying the laptop I didn't use the desktop anymore lol. In theory the desktop is better specced as well!

However when I saw Win10 was going to be a free upgrade thought I'd start using the desktop again...problem is I can't seem to get the 'get windows 10 app' on it? It popped up on my laptop no problem. But on the desktop (Win7) it won't? Anyone know why? Should be compatible and I've tried command prompts and forcing it though other means but it's just not having it. :(

Glad I'm not the only one that likes Windows 8/8.1 :)

Try some of the steps mentioned here, and see if that helps: http://superuser.com/questions/922441/why-don-t-i-have-the-get-windows-10-icon

Post back if you have any further queries.

Windows 10 is a free update to Windows 8 & 8.1 only. Not Windows 7

^^ or it was in my mind. Aha

Not true, I have W7 & have the upgrade reserved.

The email I got said 8 & 8.1 . My bad :)

Come to think of it I told a family member to reserve it on their Windows 7 laptop the other week. I'm in a world of my own haha

Do the updates on the windows 7 desktop, if it has been off for a while then it might not have SP1 on it (Service Pack 1) which is a pre-requisite of the windows 10 upgrade.

I have a desktop too, but it is in pieces awaiting a PSU upgrade which I haven't got round to yet. Rarely used it anyway.

It'd been off for over 6 months until yesterday...que 130odd updates. Good job we're not still on dial up. ;)

I did all the updates and have checked a couple of times afterwards and it says there are no more outsanding.

Have packed it up ready for the move now but will try the suggestions when it comes out again next week. :)

make sure your computers are fully up to date with Microsoft Update. The app comes down in the latest bundles I believe.

I have just clicked the Icon, :), to test it out when it arrives, i have Win 8.1 on this Laptop, touchscreen, and i find it very good indeed, also have Win7 on Mini Laptop, which ofcourse is very good and then i have Win 8.1 Dual booted with Win Xp on Main PC, i will just try it on this touch screen laptop, don't want to take the risk of messing up my Dual boot and losing my Xp install, too much stuff on there to lose. :)

That's why I may just install 10 on my laptop.

I have XP on a VMware emulator to run Microcat on my PC and don't want to mess that up.

Definitely a valid reason.

When I bought my new gaming rig last year I specified W7 as I know and trust it.

One of the reasons I've always wanted the latest Windows was so that I know I have access to the latest version of DirectX, which MS always limit based on what OS you have. I know this isn't as much of a problem as it used to be, but I got into PC gaming back in the XP days, and both Vista and & 7 bringing DirectX 10 and 11 was a big thing at the time. We seem to have been stuck with various versions of DX11 for a while, but DX12 is looking promising (and is exclusive to Win 10 apparently).

At SIGGRAPH 2014, Intel released a demo showing a computer generated asteroid field, in which DirectX 12 was claimed to be 50%-70% more efficient than DirectX 11 in rendering speed and CPU power consumption.

That's a really good idea, I might do that too. My SSD only has just over 150GB of used space so it should be quite easy and quick.

Well, my Windows 10 Beta adventure ended today, as with the latest build (10130) it was running far too hot, and trying to do anything with any graphics involved forced the laptop into a thermal shutdown. I have now rolled back to Windows 7 and will be sticking with it for the foreseeable future, until it is truly confirmed that they have worked out the overheating issue.

That's where water cooling comes in ;) still sounds rubbish!

Good advice on the windows 10,stick with my windows 7 ultimate,i like it a lot.

I'm not a windows 8 fan so windows 10 is like hit or miss.

They are dropping support for 7 in call centres from Jan 2016 and stopping updates in 2020 apparently

Finally got the Icon to show on my PC & Surface Tablet, not all updates had been installed yet, appeared about a day after fully updating.

As this has been raised by me and others, I'll post this from Microsoft's website.

Can I reinstall Windows 10 on my computer after upgrading?

Yes. Once you’ve upgraded to Windows 10 using the free upgrade offer,

you will be able to reinstall, including a clean install, on the same device.

You won’t need to purchase Windows 10 or go back to your prior version of Windows and upgrade again.

You’ll also be able to create your own installation media like a USB drive or DVD,

and use that to upgrade your device or reinstall after you’ve upgraded.

^ That's great news. Is there any info on how a clean install will work? From that it sounds like Windows 10 will be able to create an ISO or bootable disk for a clean install, or maybe we will just be able to use any available ISO with the correct CD key.

I've not read how it will activate, but I get the feeling there won't be a Key,

I'm guessing that your hardware will be logged by Microsoft when you initially upgrade to Win10,

so any clean install after that will just need to go online to activate Windows,

this would help update that hardware in future, seeing as MS are doing OS 'Updates' not new OS 'Releases'.

Not sure on the clean install either,

maybe Windows can create a USB Boot Drive from itself via a Recovery Partition on installation,

or just a link for an ISO from Microsoft.

Yeah it might link your hardware to a Windows license just like how it has worked for ages, but without the need for a CD key. And I think it's the motherboard that's linked to the license unless they changed how that worked at some point.

I have just been given a Vaio to repair, a stroppy teen launched it when it was suffering boot issues and ruined the drive. If it can go straight to 10 that would be ideal, but it won't boot from disc as it wants a UEFI boot or summat. As the recovery partition is also toast, I am having trouble sorting it.

I was given my nieces fairly new laptop (8 months) on Sunday to fix, it wouldn't boot into Windows,

I found a Hardware Check in Boot Options, it came up with 'Short DST Test Failed', I'm guessing the laptop was dropped.

So basically the 1TB HDD is on it's way out according lots of similar reports online,

even though it managed to install Windows from Partition twice, just will not boot afterwards.

In theory I could put my old 60GB SSD in and reload Windows 8 (USB Supplied), then get it updated with Windows 10 (when released),

Then once the laptop has a new HDD replaced under Warranty, a Windows 10 could be clean installed because the Hardware (exc drive) has been registered.

I tried putting in a old 80gb sata drive I had laying about but without a usb UEFI os I am doomed. However, I do have a working Vaio which I may be able to create a ISO image from to restore it for a clean install with a fresh 1TB drive.
